Komitee\u00a0to dismiss the indictment against\u00a0Angwang, stating that an investigation had led to \u201cadditional information bearing on the charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving assessed the evidence as a whole in light of that information \u2026 the government hereby moves, in the interests of justice, to dismiss the indictment without prejudice,\u201d CNN reports that prosecutors claimed they were a part of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Only a federal judge can dismiss the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>Angwang\u2019s lawyer,\u00a0John Carman,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/16\/us\/nypd-officer-chinese-agent-charges-dropped\/index.html\">told CNN<\/a> that the federal prosecutor\u2019s move to dismiss the case against his client, who was suspended with pay,\u00a0was \u201cappreciated\u201d But \u201clong overdue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anguish and expense that this police officer and Marine Corps veteran has endured are not easily described,\u201d\u00a0Carman said. \u201cWe are optimistic that the Court will grant the motion and that this great American will have the opportunity to repair untold damage to his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times has contacted the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office of the Eastern District of New York for comment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3511403\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/09\/23\/Baimadajie-Angwang-1200x980.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-medium wp-image-3511403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Baimadajie-Angwang-600x490-1.jpg\" alt=\"NYPD officer Baimadajie Angwang\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\"   style=\"display:none\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3511403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Baimadajie-Angwang-600x490-1.jpg\" alt=\"NYPD officer Baimadajie Angwang\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> NYPD officer Baimadajie Angwang, file photo (The Epoch Times).<\/figure>\n<h2>Prosecutors Say\u00a0Angwang Acted at Direction and Control of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-china\">China<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Angwang was taken into custody in Williston Park (New York) on September 21, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, prosecutors said\u00a0Angwang\u2014who was\u00a0assigned to NYPD\u2019s community affairs unit where, among other things, he served as a liaison to the community served by the 111th Precinct\u2014had \u201cacted at the direction and control of officials\u201d The Chinese Consulate in New York has been open since at least 2014.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors,\u00a0Angwang reported on the activities of Chinese citizens in the New York area and helped assessed\u00a0potential intelligence sources within the Tibetan community in New York and elsewhere. He also provided Chinese officials with\u00a0access to senior NYPD officials through invitations to official events, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to court documents, Angwang was explicit about his motivations, telling his PRC [People\u2019s Republic of China] official handler that was wanted to get promoted within the NYPD so that he could assist the PRC and bring \u2018glory to China.\u2019 In addition, Angwang told his handler that the handler\u2019s superiors in Beijing \u2018should be happy . . . because you have stretched your reach into the police\u2019,\u201d A release from the Department of Justice at the time.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/edition\/china-insider_3507800\/3509535\">criminal complaint<\/a>\u00a0also stated that Angwang\u2019s family has extensive ties to both the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese military, the People\u2019s Liberation Army.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he was charged with\u00a0committing wire fraud, making material false statements relating to information he provided on a background check form, and obstructing an official proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>Separate <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/14\/nypd-cop-baimadajie-angwang-accused-of-being-chinese-spy-has-case-dropped\/\">statement<\/a> to the New York Post, attorney\u00a0Carman accused the government of launching an illegitimate prosecution against his client.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Angwang is a great American who served his country in combat in Afghanistan and our government repaid him by treating him like he was the leader of the Taliban,\u201d\u00a0Carman said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\">\n<div class=\"top_row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-katabella-roberts\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ttl7dayERL_WEB_KatabellaRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"Katabella Roberts\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Katabella is a journalist for The Epoch Times.
