She said that \u201cWhy not make the character Indian? We\u2019ve been so inspired by Into the Spider-Verse and seeing these other characters that can embody the spirit of these iconic franchises. Why don\u2019t we try that? And so what I loved about that character, she\u2019s the closest to what I can see. Smart, A-student, thick glasses that are always falling off, and skeptical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has a lot of these amazing qualities, so as a kid watching the reruns of the original Scooby-Doo I felt like, \u2018Man I really identify with this character.\u2019 I love that she exists. He revealed this at New York Comic-Con. \u201cWe always wanted to do it as adult animation. nd for me, I loved Scooby-Doo as a kid, but it also scared me. I was scared very easily, but I was interested in kind of taking the comedy and the humor of the original, and sort of adapting it for older audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaling also spoke out about the decision to make it an animated adult show. \u201cWe\u2019ve loved what people have done with their own versions of it. We felt this was a really interesting and fun way to make a different choice. Except Fred. Fred just felt like a very white person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaling was also added. \u201cFred had to be white. According to UPI, Grandy said that \u201cWhen Mindy came to me and said she wanted to do it, it was because she connected to her because she was this girl who was the smart one who does all of the work and doesn\u2019t get nearly enough credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he would then claim they didn\u2019t decide to race-swap character until later on in the production, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until we got much farther down the road where it looked like this [show] might happen that we really started to talk about how the character should look and should they be South Asian. We can be more like \u2013 teens who are 15, 16, or 17, what are those sorts of urges, which you couldn\u2019t have in the show that was for younger kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaling stated that Velma was an icon of gay women. \u201c[Velma\u2019s]\u00a0self-discovery is a really big part of this series. We don\u2019t want to ignore that she\u2019s an icon for young gay women, and I think that\u2019s really interesting. Imbue them with meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained, \u201cWhy does Velma say \u2018jinkies\u2019? That\u2019s a big thing that we wanted to lean into. Same with all the characters. We call him Norville in our series. Well, when does he become Shaggy? That\u2019s one of the real appealing things of doing this project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandy and Kaling believed that they could take. <em>Velma<\/em> They go in their own directions.
