The authors incorrectly compared the rates of disability within evolutionary Biology to the general population.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The paper suggests that concepts such \u201cfitness\u201d And \u201cnatural selection\u201d \u2014\u00a0 foundational to the field of evolutionary biology, which studies the diversification and adaptation of life forms over time \u2014 are \u201charmful\u201d And have been \u201cweaponized against marginalized communities in the modern day.\u201d And the authors\u2019 thesis is that evolutionary biology\u2019s use of purportedly \u201cableist\u201d Terms and concepts discourage disabled people from studying in the field and are therefore more discriminatory than other areas. The authors argue that instead of drawing from other academic disciplines, they will use samples from their own. \u201cthe proportion of disabled evolutionary biologists is far below the population average.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The authors compared a National Center for Science and Engineering Studies statistic (NCSES), which found 8.1% of disabled recipients of doctorates in the life sciences, with a CDC statistic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/infographic-disability-impacts-all.html\">26%<\/a> Approximately 5% of the US population were disabled. This is a surprising fact. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/67\/wr\/pdfs\/mm6732a3-H.pdf\">26%<\/a> Through the CDC stats were determined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/dhds\/data-guide\/status-and-types.html\">self-reporting<\/a>Based on a 6-question set, the study included participants over 65 who have significantly higher rates age-related disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative way to get a representative sample is to compare evolutionary biology and other academic fields. Rushworth et.al. did not mention that the Rushworth research itself recognized a \u201cmore conservative national estimate\u201d 12.8% according to a US Census.<\/p>\n<p>It is an intellectually demanding field that requires a field component to research. One might assume there would be fewer people who pursue evolutionary biology, but data shows that it is not as common as other academic fields.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The publication\u2019s former editor-in-chief, Dan Bolnick, <a href=\"https:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/2022\/12\/29\/a-once-respected-biology-journal-indicts-evolutionary-biology-for-ableism\/\">said<\/a> This particular paper was a \u201cspecial issue\u201d That \u201cinvited papers at the intersection of humanities and sciences,\u201d And that it was reviewed and approved by a \u201cspecial team\u201d That included humanities researchers who didn&#8217;t include them. \u201cusual board.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Evolutionistrue\">Jerry Coyne<\/a>A prolific evolutionary biologist, and the author of the best-selling book, \u201cWhy Evolution Is True,\u201d Hosts a website under the same name, where he recently <a href=\"https:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/2022\/12\/29\/a-once-respected-biology-journal-indicts-evolutionary-biology-for-ableism\/\">reviewed<\/a> The paper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, it\u2019s one of the more ludicrous examples of science policing I\u2019ve seen,\u201d Coyne agreed, saying he supports accommodation for people with disabilities to have the same opportunities. \u201cSecond, it shows how the American Society of Naturalists, which publishes the journal, has gone down the same woke road as the other ecology and evolution societies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper makes several suggestions to rectify evolutionary biology\u2019s ableist past, which mostly include changes to terminology they deem offensive and providing a chart with alternative language that should be used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the authors, the field is rife with words like \u2018mutant\/wild type,\u2019 \u2018fitness optimum,\u2019 \u2018mutations\u2019 (We should really say) \u2018base pair change\u2019), and \u2018optimization,&#8217;\u201d said Coyne. \u201cThe paper ends with a demand \u2014 not a request \u2014 that we purge evolutionary biology of ableist language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most concerning is their call for an overhaul of foundational concepts in evolutionary biology, such as \u201cfitness.\u201d Within the context of evolutionary biology, fitness refers to measures of reproductive success, not the condition of an individual organism being physically fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authors\u2019 Discussions are muddled by the use of \u2018fitness\u2019 Similar to \u2018able-bodied,\u2019 It means that \u2018lower fitness\u2019 is somehow a slur on the disabled,\u201d said Coyne. \u201cIn our field, the term was not used to denigrate the disabled, but simply to express the relative number of copies of a given gene variant in the next generation compared to alternative variants of the same gene.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authors also disparage the use of the term \u2018survival of the fittest\u2019 because, they argue, it not only disparages handicapped people, but has led to social darwinism, a philosophy embraced by capitalists,\u201d He added.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from ableism the authors also accuse the field evolutionary biology of racism and white
