Chris Stewart declared that the fight for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/debt-ceiling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debt ceiling<\/a> This is an excellent opportunity to reduce government spending.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on CBS\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/nonsense-that-biden-didnt-know-he-had-classified-documents-stewart-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Face the Nation<\/a>\u201d Stewart said that the main driver of inflation&#8217;s rise was government spending. Stewart said that he didn&#8217;t want to force the government to shut down, but hoped both parties could find a solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, we certainly want to work with [Democrats],\u201d Stewart. \u201cAnd we hope that they\u2019ll work with us and the president will work with us. Look, I\u2019m not a fan of government shutdowns. I honestly don\u2019t know anyone who is. It doesn\u2019t help. On the other hand, I do want to make this point, it\u2019s so important, look, the reason that we\u2019re dealing with inflation that we are, which has been generational, and it\u2019s worth remembering that it hurts the poorest among us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]here will be Republicans who will say, \u2018we need to reform, \u2018we need to use this as a vehicle to try to put some limits on our spending and our debt and our deficits,&#8217;\u201d He concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I am one of them. And there are many others who will be, so the question that you\u2019ve asked now is, are those two principles, you know, the fact we need to reform and cut our deficits in our spending, can we reconcile that with at the same time, we don\u2019t want to harm the credit the United States government. That\u2019s our goal. I think Republicans are aligned on that. I hope the president is as well. And hopefully we get to agreement on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This Thursday, the federal government will reach its statutory debt limit. A <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/136\/Debt-Limit-Letter-to-Congress-McCarthy-20230113.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let me know<\/a> On Friday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen advised Congressmen that the government should start taking action. \u201cextraordinary measures\u201d to stop the United States from defaulting its debts.<\/p>\n<p>This month&#8217;s measures include the suspension of new investments in the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund and the Postal Service Retiree Health Benefits Fund.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/federal-spending-must-be-cut-26-to-balance-budget-even-more-to-keep-core-social-defense-programs-intact-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analysis<\/a> Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget ruled that the federal budget needs to be reduced by 26% in order to balance it over the next ten years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Utah Republican Rep.
