Gergen responded that it was not very big. \u201cIt\u2019s very, very big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot legally, but politically,\u201d Gergen claimed. \u201cIt\u2019s a very, very big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gergen\u2019s claim may not be entirely accurate, as Attorney General Merrick Garland announced last week that he appointed a special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into the scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think that they, that the Biden people, they may be making a big mistake,\u201d Gergen said. \u201cI don\u2019t think sitting there, hunkering down now, you\u2019re just acting like it\u2019s not out there \u2026 they\u2019re going to get creamed doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gergen stated that the Biden administration&#8217;s handling of the matter will lead the American public into asking the question. \u201cWhat are they hiding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>ANDERSON COOPER, CNN HOST: Want to talk about the political fallout, which could be considerable, and unwelcome to the administration, certainly, coming, as Phil Mattingly mentioned, with inflation cooling, and gas prices dropping, and the President\u2019s approval numbers growing, in the polls, at least before this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>CNN Senior Political Analyst David Gergen, a White House insider for Democrats as well Republicans, is joining us. She\u2019s Washington Bureau Chief for The Boston Globe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>David Gergen, let\u2019s start with you. What a mess this is for the Biden administration!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>DAVID GERGEN PRESIDENTIAL ADVISER to NIXON. FORD. REAGAN &#038;CLINTON. CNN SENIOR POLITICAL ANALYST. AUTHOR. \u201cHEARTS TOUCHED WITH FIRE: HOW GREAT LEADERS ARE MADE\u201d: It\u2019s very, very big. Not legally, but politically, it\u2019s a very, very big deal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This was a President who was moving upward. For the first time in his presidency, he\u2019s got his numbers up, people are feeling better about the economy, for all sorts of reasons, to believe that he can now present himself \u2014 the fears that people like me have, about how old is he and can he govern well. If he can keep on this track, those fears will vanish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But now, along comes this gigantic story, which was totally unexpected, and it\u2019s knocked that \u2014 the knock for six\u2013<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: \u2013the original plan, now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Anderson, however, I believe they, the Biden people, may be making a major mistake. But I might be wrong. I think they\u2019ve done a wonderful job being cooperative with the government, and they\u2019ve done it, quote, by the book, as they were saying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But I don\u2019t think sitting there, hunkering down now, just acting like it\u2019s not out there, is a good strategy. They\u2019re going to get creamed doing that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: There\u2019s also been the drip, drip, drip of information.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: Some of that unpreventable because they didn\u2019t know a Special Counsel was coming.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: But they did know when they had the President talk about the first batch of documents that were found\u2013<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: \u2013they had already known that there were other documents found.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: You would think they might have just jumped \u2014 announced that all at once?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: Exactly. That\u2019s why they could have put that out there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: Right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: And that\u2019s where they \u2014 there\u2019s a temptation in every one of these kinds of crises, to hunker down. And it\u2019s the wrong temptation. It\u2019s the wrong temptation to listen to \u2014 look to \u2014 you going all the way back to Iran\/Contra, and other kind of crises, like that. You\u2019ve just got to get the facts out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GERGEN: \u201cThese are the facts we know. There\u2019s some facts we don\u2019t know. And we\u2019ll keep you posted.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER: Jackie, do you think this largely takes away the White House\u2019s ability to criticize former President Trump\u2019s handling of classified documents? There are clearly big differences between them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>JACKIE KUCINICH, CNN POLITICAL ANALYST, WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF, THE BOSTON GLOBE: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>COOPER : But how often does nuance in political discourse make a breakthrough these days? I mean, rarely.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>KUCINICH: Well, yes. And that\u2019s the thing, right? This is a sure way to muddy the waters, and I&#8217;m sure this is what Republicans are thrilled about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I mean, when you look at the House Republican majority, there was a perception that many of these investigations were essentially fishing expeditions. Well, because of this, they were thrown a fish, and they\u2019re actually able to grab onto something.
