A federal license is required to possess a weapon classed as a &#8220;short-barreled rifle&#8221; under the National Firearms Act.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping our communities safe from gun violence is among the Department\u2019s highest priorities,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-new-rule-address-stabilizing-braces-accessories-used-convert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> Attorney General Merrick Garland \u201cToday\u2019s rule makes clear that firearm manufacturers, dealers, and individuals cannot evade these important public safety protections simply by adding accessories to pistols that transform them into short-barreled rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/firearms-and-explosives-atf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(ATF)<\/a> followed Biden\u2019s directive and developed the rule, which was submitted to the Federal Register on Friday. Owners of stabilizing braces will have to register their rifles as short-barreled rifles under the new rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis rule enhances public safety and prevents people from circumventing the laws Congress passed almost a century ago. In the days of Al Capone, Congress said back then that short-barreled rifles and sawed-off shotguns should be subjected to greater legal requirements than most other guns,\u201d Steve Dettelbach, Director of ATF, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the DOJ, gun owners can return their braces and surrender. \u201ccovered short-barreled rifles to ATF.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Amendment groups and Republicans both criticized the rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Erich Pratt, Senior Vice President of Gun Owners of America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunowners.org\/goa-condemns-biden-rule-to-criminalize-pistol-braced-firearms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> that his group\u2019s legal arm would be filing a suit to challenge the rule, noting that pistol braces are used by disabled individuals to safely use handguns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden just initiated the largest federal gun registration scheme in our nation\u2019s history without even the passage of a new law.
