The renewal of Section 702 could be met with increased resistance from Congress as Republicans seek to investigate the security agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis authority provides the U.S. government irreplaceable insights, whether we\u2019re reporting on cybersecurity threats, counterterrorism threats, or protecting U.S. and allied forces,\u201d Nakasone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/01\/13\/nsa-leader-plea-key-surveillance-power?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_campaign=editorial&#038;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> At a meeting of U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. \u201cWe have saved lives because of 702.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Section 702, which was first implemented in 2008, is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-united-states-government-us-republican-party-surveillance-donald-trump-aa98d51e59d02a1361833d1a4f431e23?utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&#038;utm_medium=AP&#038;utm_source=Twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renew<\/a> Donald Trump in 2018, after he was elected president. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-america-donald-trump-politics-077b8a0f34354149ac2b55ce533f203a\"><\/a> The widely discredited Steele Dossier which claimed to contain evidence of collusion between Russia, Trump and his campaign was the reason that the power was granted. After initial doubt, Trump restored the power following a discussion between Paul Ryan (R.-WI), then-House Speaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nakasone stated that the power was a gift from God. \u201cplays an outsize role in protecting the nation\u201d and plays an important part in understanding hostile nations such as China. He added that he couldn\u2019t fully explain everything allowed by the powers due to national security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Critics say that the surveillance powers are dangerous because they allow spy agencies to monitor U.S. citizens without warrants. Tucker Carlson is Fox News host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/explosive-tucker-carlson-accuses-biden-administration-of-spying-on-him\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claim<\/a> In June 2021, the NSA was \u201cmonitoring\u201d his show\u2019s \u201celectronic communications,\u201d These could have been related with interview requests from foreign nationals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cindy Cohn (executive director of Electronic Frontier Foundation) stated that the Section 702 powers were essentially a matter of principle at the Thursday meeting. \u201cnational security exception to the U.S. Constitution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people and indeed people all around the world have lost the ability to have a private conversation over digital networks,\u201d She continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans may have to debate the expiration of Section 702, as some Republicans have become more skeptical about intelligence agencies following the Russia collusion hoax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans also voted this Week to establish a committee to investigate and report on the FBI and other security agencies. \u201cThe security state believes itself to be above the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress,\u201d Rep. Dan Bishop (R.NC), spoke Tuesday from House floor. \u201cToday we\u2019re putting the deep state on notice. We\u2019re coming for you on behalf of everyday Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
