If the YMCA requires someone to use a restroom or other areas that are gender specific, a person should not be allowed to do so. \u201cidentify,\u201d It could be, according to the statement. \u201cbe detrimental for a trans individual\u2019s well-being and safety and puts the YMCA at risk for discrimination complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials from the YMCA updated the policy in April, the same time as the San Diego Board of Supervisors passed it. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/5657be7bd78000fed1bad882d\/files\/626f61b2-c56c-df09-e8c4-262155e1be1f\/CEDAW_Draft_OrdinanceCleanHL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ordinance<\/a>The opponents claim that it redefines what the word means \u201cwomen\u201d and jeopardizes women\u2019s rights and safety.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego County supervisors advanced the ordinance in May of last year, based on the United Nations women\u2019s bill of rights formally known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/womenwatch\/daw\/cedaw\/text\/econvention.htm\">The Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women<\/a>\u201d President Jimmy Carter signed it. While the U.S. Senate didn&#8217;t ratify it, more than 180 countries signed the international treaty.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego County however added transgender inclusion language and nonbinary inclusive language. It applies to programs and county departments according to its text.<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Maher, a San Diego resident and founder the citizen group \u201cRooted Wings,\u201d Prior to the ordinance&#8217;s passage, supervisors in county were told that it would have major implications for girls and women in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Maher explained to The Daily Wire the current policies, both in San Diego and nationally, are unacceptable. \u201cdangerous and massively consequential for the safety and well-being of children,\u201d adding that she refused to look the other way on Phillips\u2019 experience at the YMCA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not rocket science,\u201d Maher said. \u201cThis is as obvious as 2+2 = 4 \u2014 although, these days, some would say that is controversial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must protect our children from ideologies that are putting them in harm\u2019s way,\u201d She continued.<\/p>\n<p>Tracie Thill, founder and leader of the local citizen group ahref=&#8221;https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1126358298103873\/&#8221;>SanteeParents4Choice<\/a>The Daily Wire was informed by a spokesperson that the group was concerned about elections in San Diego County. \u201cchange the definition of a woman\u201d It would permit males to use the female locker room at public schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, this happened at our local Santee YMCA locker room, where countless minor girls use the facilities,\u201d Thill said. \u201cThis will not be tolerated here. We will do whatever it takes to work with city leaders and YMCA officials to make a policy change \u2014 or the Y can see themselves out of Santee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego County YMCA officials said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kusi.com\/santee-ymca-allows-naked-man-to-use-womens-locker-room-with-underage-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KUSI News<\/a> The organization is aware that a situation exists \u201cinvolving two members in the locker room of the Santee YMCA earlier this month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe comfort and safety of all our members is our highest priority,\u201d The statement was read in part. \u201cAs a community focused organization, we strive to meet the needs of all individuals. We recognize that birth and gender identity are sensitive subjects. We rely on subject matter experts, laws, and guidelines established by the State of California to ensure our policies are welcoming and respectful for all community members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of this commitment to ensure all individuals feel comfortable, we are reviewing lock room floorplans across all facilities within our association.
