She said that the dress code must be clarified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIsn\u2019t it is essential to always maintain a formal and professional atmosphere on the House floor?\u201d Kelley\u00a0asked. \u201cAnd to ensure this happens, I have felt compelled to offer this amendment, which cleans up some of the language in rule 98 by mirroring the previous language and the gentleman\u2019s dress code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMen are required to wear a jacket, a shirt and a tie, correct? And if they walked in here without a tie, they would get gaveled down in a heartbeat. If they walked in without a jacket, they would get gaveled down in a heartbeat. So, we are so interested in being equal,\u201d Kelley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/13\/politics\/missouri-dress-code-lawmakers-house\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAll we\u2019re trying to do today is to take the same rules that we have and make them more clear,\u201d Brenda Shields is a Republican state representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/01\/12\/missouri-women-dress-code-arms-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The old dress code was in effect from 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/house.mo.gov\/billtracking\/bills211\/rules\/rules.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> That \u201c[p]roper attire for women shall be dresses or skirts or slacks worn with a blazer or sweater and appropriate dress shoes or boots. This rule shall apply to all members and staff on the floor of the House and lower gallery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It says, &#8220;For men it says&#8230;&#8221; \u201cproper attire for gentlemen shall be business attire, including coat, tie, dress trousers, and dress shoes or boots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vote approved the dress code amendment. The rules package containing the new dress code was then approved. <a href=\"https:\/\/house.mo.gov\/BillTracking\/PDFViewer\/web\/viewer.html?file=\/billtracking\/bills231\/jrnpdf\/jrn005.pdf#page=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passed<\/a> Wednesday, April 13, 2010 at a <a href=\"https:\/\/house.mo.gov\/Bill.aspx?bill=HR11&#038;year=2023&#038;code=R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vote<\/a> Between 105 and 51<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Amendment to one dress code <a href=\"https:\/\/house.mo.gov\/BillTracking\/PDFViewer\/web\/viewer.html?file=\/billtracking\/bills231\/jrnpdf\/jrn005.pdf#page=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> That \u201c[p]roper attire for women shall be business attire, including jackets worn with dresses, skirts, or slacks, and dress shoes or boots. For the purposes of this rule, \u2018jacket\u2019 shall include blazers and knit blazers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The word \u201ccardigan\u201d Also, it was added after the word \u201cblazers\u201d In an amendment by Shields, people reportedly pushed back against the rule change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Especially Democrats voiced concerns on the House Floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are fighting \u2014 again \u2014 for a woman\u2019s right to choose for something. This time, it\u2019s how she covers herself \u2014 and the interpretation of someone who has no background in fashion,\u201d Raychel Proudie, Democratic State Representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/01\/12\/missouri-women-dress-code-arms-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> During a speech. \u201cI spent $1,200 on a suit, and I can\u2019t wear it in the People\u2019s House because someone who doesn\u2019t have the range tells me that it\u2019s inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Proudie stated that some of her coworkers could be pregnant, and would have to buy new clothing to conform to the rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe are a place of laws and words do matter,\u201d Proudie said. \u201cThis is a place where we ought to be dressed in business formal, which does call for women to have our arms\u00a0covered. I think we\u2019re being quite pedantic here by making rules so petty and what it will ultimately lead to is the disenfranchisement of folks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou surely don\u2019t have the money off the salary that we make to go buy a bunch of new clothes or tailored clothes, and I hope you\u2019re able to continue to wear your cardigan and vote on behalf of the people who sent you here,\u201d Proudie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ashley Aune, Democratic State Representative, also spoke out, saying: \u201cDo you know what it feels like to have a bunch of men in this room looking at your top trying to decide whether it\u2019s appropriate or not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kelley was in favor of the change and asked the House why they were even discussing the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou would think, you would think, that all you would have to do is, say, dress professionally, and women could handle it,\u201d Kelley replied. \u201cYou would think elected officials could handle that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Missouri House lawmakers voted to change the women\u2019s dress code on Wednesday, sparking outrage from Democrats and several legacy media reports that looked to imply there was sexism at play, even though the new code ended up looking surprisingly similar to the previous dress code.
