The 44-yearold was visiting Florida recently to discuss his agreement with the school.<\/p>\n<p>While there, Reed was asked a question regarding Damar Hamlin\u2019s harrowing collapse and the National Football League. He presented a bold and profound perspective, and compared the NFL with slavery. \u201cfields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed stated that players are the most important thing in his life. \u201cget treated like sh*t\u201d They should also have insurance and guarantees. Hamlin\u2019s near-death incident is not the basis for his opinion, but an example of how dangerous that the sport can be.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>I\u2019ve been saying they need to put guarantees in the contracts because you can die playing this sport. Our sport been the worst sport and everybody knowing that our contracts still not guaranteed and we still get treated like sh*t, for lack of better words. It\u2019s the truth. It&#8217;s what people know.<\/p>\n<p><cite>\u2014 Ed Reed<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hamlin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/buffalo-bills-damar-hamlin-going-home-released-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He was discharged from the hospital, and is now able to continue his recovery at home.<\/a>This season, he played on his rookie contract. It is not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>A player must have at most three credit seasons to qualify for a league pension. Hamlin only has two.<\/p>\n<p>His contract also includes standard provisions, which reduce his salary, as he was placed on Injured reserve. Fortunately, though, the NFL, NFL Player\u2019s Association and Buffalo Bills have reached an agreement so that Hamlin will be payed in full.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bills?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bills<\/a> S Damar Hamlin\u2019s 4-year, $3.64M contract contains a standard split to pay him at a lower rate if he lands on Injured Reserve. He was placed on Injured Reserve this week. According to sources, Buffalo has reached an agreement that will pay him full compensation from the NFLPA.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RapSheet\/status\/1612053825484898306?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nevertheless, Hamlin\u2019s collapse serves as an intense reminder of the reality that comes with the sport. Reed wants to make sure that no agreements have to be reached\u2014 he wants guaranteed contracts.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ed-reed-seemingly-compared-the-nfl-to-slave-fields\">Ed Reed reportedly compared the NFL with slave farms.<\/h2>\n<p>Reed made a striking analogy while discussing his points of view.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>You are aware that our league is run [sic] By the owners. That is what we know. We know it\u2019s not a players-led league. We all know the truth. We all know the truth. [sic] the truth and the truth is who runs it and why it\u2019s ran [sic] that way, it\u2019s still the fields. It\u2019s still an extension of the fields.<\/p>\n<p><cite>\u2014 Ed Reed<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u201cfields\u201d that Reed referred to aren\u2019t exactly clear. He did, however, seem to have compared the NFL to a modern plantation that shackles athletes under guise if employment.<\/p>\n<p>Reed has issues with the NFL&#8217;s way of running it and continues to battle nerve issues. His insurance doesn&#8217;t cover him.<\/p>\n<p>Reed stated that he wouldn&#8217;t change his ways. Reed stated that he is satisfied with the work he did. \u201cno regrets\u201d He did not play in the NFL to make a name for himself. He just wanted to see positive change.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Crazy part is that in all honestly, I\u2019d do it again. I have no regrets,\u201d Reed said. \u201cWhy? Because the way the world is set up that was one of my ways out as a young African American man and it still is and I\u2019d do it again. However, I must have it in my contracts so that you can die and that your insurance covers all of that.<\/p>\n<p><cite>\u2014 Ed Reed<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hamlin\u2019s injury continues to advance discussions about what the business of football should look like.
