J.B. Pritzker on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Iroquois County Sheriff\u00a0Clinton J. Perzee was among a number of Illinois law enforcement officials who took to social media following the passage of the bill, arguing that it violates the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe right to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty and property is regarded as an inalienable right by the people,\u201d Perzee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IroquoisCountySheriffsDept\/posts\/pfbid02RqZZwqc3Hmx1GeaPzHpv8Zpq3ao2n6CTvXpzAG9kTcd4jzvYiePGAjD7t9sFbydNl\">In a letter<\/a>. \u201cI, among many others, believe that HB 5471 is a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 13, 2022,\u00a0the Iroquois County Board passed Resolution R2022-102 in opposition to the bill being enacted and further resolved at the time not to enforce or support the law through the \u201cuse of county funds, appropriation,\u00a0personnel, or property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the Iroquois County Jail\u2019s custodian and chief law enforcement official, Perzee said that neither he nor his office would check to ensure that \u201clawful gun owners register their weapons with the State, nor will we be arresting or housing law abiding individuals that have been arrested solely with non-compliance of this Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stated that additional gun-related crimes would be continued to be investigated and enforced.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4047498\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Orange-County-Gun-Show-1200x800-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4047498\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy wp-image-4047498 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Orange-County-Gun-Show-1200x800-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"   style=\"display:none\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4047498 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Orange-County-Gun-Show-1200x800-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> An AR-15-style rifle that is legal in California will be on display at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show, Orange County Fairgrounds, Costa Mesa, Calif. on June 5, 2021. Fallon\/AFP via Getty Images<\/figure>\n<h2>\u2018Right to Keep and Bear Arms\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Edwards County Sheriff Darby Boewe posted a similar message on social media, saying that he had sworn to uphold the Constitution rights of Americans when elected to office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of my duties that I accepted upon being sworn into office was to protect the rights provided to all of us, in the Constitution,\u201d Boewe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/edwardscountyso\/posts\/pfbid02TdriXPNot6aQ16Y43e5rr7i99zyTEMTH394ZurLczFJZActKAT7ubPJCbJsCTCzSl\">In a letter<\/a>. \u201cOne of those rights enumerated is the right of the people to KEEP and BEAR ARMS provided under the 2nd Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty and property is regarded as an inalienable right by the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly identical letters were shared by sheriffs from\u00a0Logan County, Kankakee County,\u00a0Piatt County,\u00a0LaSalle County,\u00a0Knox County, Pike County, Putnam County, St. Clair County, Union County, Wabash County,\u00a0Woodford County, Williamson County, Wayne County, Shelby County, Ogle County, Jo Daviess, and more.<\/p>\n<p>These messages are from law enforcement officers \u201cpolitical grandstanding at its worst,\u201d Pritzker\u2019s office said in a statement obtained by local media. The governor\u2019s office reportedly claimed that sheriffs and departments that refuse to enforce the ban are \u201cin violation of their oath of office.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bill\u2019s Passage<\/h2>\n<p>The Democrat-controlled legislature in the state banned semiautomatic guns and magazines as well as devices that permit a weapon&#8217;s fire speed to increase on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Protecting Illinois Communities Act passed the Illinois Senate on Monday night\u00a0by a vote margin of 34\u201320. The bill makes it illegal\u00a0for Illinois residents to purchase, transfer, or manufacture \u201cassault weapons\u201d Extended magazines<\/p>\n<p>The following is an extract from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.gov\/legislation\/fulltext.asp?DocName=10200SB2226ham003&#038;GA=102&#038;LegID=134879&#038;SessionId=110&#038;SpecSess=0&#038;DocTypeId=SB&#038;DocNum=2226&#038;GAID=16&#038;Session=\">bill\u2019s language<\/a>Anonymous \u201cassault weapon\u201d A semiautomatic rifle can accept a removable magazine. It also has a pistol grip, thumbhole stock, flash suppressor, barrel shroud or other characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>Semiautomatic handguns with a threaded barrel and second pistol grip, flash suppressor, shroud and other features that accept a magazine detachable or can be easily modified to accept one are also considered an \u201cassault weapon\u201d The law.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of AK rifles like the AR-10 or AR-15 are considered assault weapons by the rules. Firearms of\u00a0.50-caliber are also prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>The Illinois Sheriffs\u2019 Association (ISA) said in a statement it was \u201cextremely disappointed\u201d The bill was approved, further restricting gun owners who are lawful to buy a range of weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ISA has opposed this legislation throughout its development and remains opposed to the bill as passed by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor,\u201d ISA\u2019s statement reads. \u201cWe, as a representative of chief law enforcement officials throughout Illinois, are very concerned and disturbed by the ongoing and escalating violence throughout our State and Country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are always supportive of new tools, techniques and laws that assist us in preventing and holding accountable those that wage efforts of harm and violence on others,\u201d It continued. \u201cHowever, this new law does not do that. (Scott Olson\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<h2>Commonly owned guns<\/h2>\n<p>The National Rifle Association (NRA) and Gun Owners of America\u00a0said\u00a0the law banned many commonly owned rifles.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia-based Gun Owners of America, (GOA), stated before Monday&#8217;s Senate vote that the bill sought to ban common firearms and condemned the requirement to register them within their state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only does this tyrannical proposition infringe on the rights of all Illinois citizens, but it is also extremely dangerous,\u201d GOA said in a\u00a0statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese commonly owned semi-automatic firearms are used countless times every year to save lives and deter crime. Banning them will only prevent law-abiding citizens from purchasing the best firearm to defend themselves,\u201d The statement was continued. \u201cNot to mention, the requirement to register currently owned firearms is vehemently unconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Pritzker\u2019s signing of the bill, the NRA said that \u201cmany semi-automatic firearms that law-abiding citizens commonly own\u201d Hunting and self-defense are now prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1994 and 2004, the United States maintained a federal system. \u201cassault weapons\u201d The ban prohibited the production and sale of certain semiautomatic weapons as well as higher-capacity magazines.
