DeSantis unveils the Future of Conservation in Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NojvKw7MZH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/NojvKw7MZH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1612830977742577666?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 10, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Expressing a desire \u201cto leave Florida to God better than we found it,\u201d DeSantis signed an executive agreement aimed at the following things:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Over four years, pledge $3.5 billion for conservation<\/li>\n<li>Directs DEP for the identification and prioritization of strategies to accelerate water quality restoration at Indian River Lagoon<\/li>\n<li>Directs DEP that it works with the legislature to expand the wastewater grant program. This will include non-point source and agricultural runoff.<\/li>\n<li>South Florida Water Management District directs Everglades restoration projects to be completed quickly, including those that lower the risk of harmful discharges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DeSantis also addressed the Chinese investor trend. \u201cgobbling up land\u201d Sunshine State. He noted the Marxist, Leninist turn of Xi Jinping during his tenure as CCP President, and expressed a desire to prevent China\u2019s purchase of both farmland and residential property, stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSo, my view on our economy\u2026in Florida is, you know, we don\u2019t want to have holdings by hostile nations. And so, if you look at the Chinese Communist Party, they\u2019ve been very active throughout the Western Hemisphere in gobbling up land and investing in different things.<\/p>\n<p>And, you know, when they have interests that are opposed to ours and you see how they\u2019ve wielded their authority, and especially with President Xi, who\u2019s taken a much more Marxist, Leninist turn since he\u2019s been ruling China, that is not in the best interests of Florida to have the Chinese Communist Party owning farmland, owning land close to military bases, which, you know, my view is \u2013 and I think there\u2019s a broad agreement on those two \u2013 but my view is, \u2018Okay, yeah, no farmland, but why would you want them buying residential developments and things like that?\u2019 I don\u2019t want them owning subdivisions and things like that.<\/p>\n<p>I think that the issue is going to be \u2013 I think people agree with that \u2013 the issue\u2019s going to be, yeah, obviously, if someone comes in and buys, it\u2019s not CCP that\u2019s signing that. These are holding companies, and all that. So you\u2019ve got to structure that in a way that will effectively police it, but yes, we do not need to have CCP influence in Florida\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/politics\/desantis-talks-family-china-florida-democrats-during-1st-2023-news-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WFLA<\/a>DeSantis cited previous actions taken by the state to counter CCP influence.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cObviously if someone comes in and buys, it\u2019s not the CCP that\u2019s signing this, these are holding companies and all that,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cBut yes, we do not need to have CCP influence in Florida\u2019s economy,\u201d It was noted that Florida had banned Confucius Institutes from Florida colleges to stop its influence. There needed to be a mechanism to block them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve used those Confucius Institutes across the country to bring propaganda, as if universities don\u2019t have enough problems already,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cWe\u2019ve also done things to limit their ability to fund research in our universities, I think we\u2019re going to go further than that, the legislature only went so far a couple of years ago. I think there\u2019s an appetite to do even more,\u201d They said that their influence was \u201cinsidious\u201d Mentioning how Disney, Wall Street and other entertainment companies would alter policies and things to placate CCP.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019ve addressed the Chinese purchase of farmland in the U.S. previously. As Mike Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/mike_miller\/2021\/07\/26\/why-are-we-selling-farmland-to-china-n416549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Not noted<\/a> July:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Deborah J. Comstock, whom she describes as \u201ca girl farmer\u201d \u2014 she actually\u00a0<em>Is<\/em>\u00a0a farmer \u2014 wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Deborah+J.+Comstock&#038;sxsrf=ALeKk00Ja0UDWsynlHva3bBk13cWG25J-Q%3A1627309726376&#038;source=hp&#038;ei=nsb-YK36E5S90PEP0KyioAw&#038;iflsig=AINFCbYAAAAAYP7UrpTjzlXPOUaMIDlYG4zh0XEYWGHx&#038;oq=Deborah+J.+Comstock&#038;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBggAEBYQHjoHCCMQ6gIQJ1DiIVjiIWCNLGgBcAB4AIABWYgBWZIBATGYAQCgAQKgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6sAEK&#038;sclient=gws-wiz&#038;ved=0ahUKEwitwbWR-YDyAhWUHjQIHVCWCMQQ4dUDCAo&#038;uact=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 op-ed<\/a>\u00a0For the Ionia Sentinel &#8211; Standard:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The goal of China\u2019s Communist Party authorities suggest specific strategies to invest in agriculture overseas and to gain greater control over oilseed and grain products, to create policies to support facilities, equipment and inputs for agricultural production, and to create large multinational grain-trading conglomerates.<\/p>\n<p>The revenues from these productions do not pass through the American commodities markets but, rather, flow through the foreign entities\u2019 own distribution channels, directly to the home country.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This. Is. Insane. While Communist China\u2019s ownership of farmland in America is a small part of total U.S. farmland of roughly 900 million acres, it is an increasing trend by the ChiComs. Shocked? Me, neither. This begs the question:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Why would we sell any American land\/industry to CHINA?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is amazing to think that the \u201cgirl farmer\u201d Many states don&#8217;t have any regulations to prevent such sales.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DeSantis seems to be able to see the whole picture by observing: \u201cIt\u2019s a larger issue. It\u2019s just one, I think we\u2019re a big fish now, I think we have the 13th biggest economy in the world, if we were our own country in Florida, you know, we\u2019re a force to be reckoned with.\u201d DeSantis acknowledged the dangers associated with being too closely tied to China in economic terms. \u201cIt hurts our economy and it hurts our security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis added: \u201cWhen COVID hit, people needed all these supplies; I think like 100 percent of it was made in China. Why would you want to rely on a hostile nation for things that are integral for our quality of life and security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where does Justin Trudeau fit into this conversation? As noted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11622007\/Gov-Ron-DeSantis-wants-ban-Chinese-investors-buying-land-Florida.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>Canada has banned foreign investors from real estate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Trudeau prohibited foreign investors from purchasing homes in Canada earlier this year to cool the overheated housing markets. Most of Canada\u2019s foreign investors are from China and India. January 1 was the effective date of the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Trudeau implemented the ban in response to an increase of 38 percent in property prices due to immigrants. Census data released in October revealed immigrants now make up 23 percent of the population, with most coming from Asia \u2013 causing many industry experts to posit that there is a connection.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It isn\u2019t just Canada that\u2019s taken note of the land gobbling, either.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Florida&#8217;s governor is similar to other countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada that have imposed taxes on foreign buyers who purchase property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">New Zealand, the country where Chinese investment is blamed for a large spike in home-property prices, now has a 15% tax on non-resident buyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Australia has imposed a 12.6 percent tax since 2017 on foreign buyers who purchase homes worth more than $750,000. Canada also imposes a 12.6 percent tax on foreign buyers who purchase homes worth more than $750,000. This has been in effect since 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to Wharton Business Journal of UPenn however, the US doesn&#8217;t impose tax restrictions on foreign buyers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Maybe Ron DeSantis&#8217; latest move will set a precedent.
