Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is leading the agency&#8217;s shift towards diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA\u2019s mission-critical pilot safety alerting system <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/us-flights-resume-after-nationwide-system-outage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crumbling<\/a> Overnight, the agency was forced to ground all outgoing air traffic across America and delay over 6,500 flights. The FAA has had much to say about the system under Buttigieg\u2019s watch, but not for matters relating to its functionality or upkeep. The agency focuses on the positive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/documentLibrary\/media\/Order\/7930.2S_Chg_2_dtd_12-2-21.pdf\">Announcement<\/a> in December 2021 that it had changed the system\u2019s name from &#8220;Notice to Airmen&#8221; To &#8220;Notice to Air Mission,&#8221; A &#8220;more applicable term&#8221; According to the agency, is &#8220;inclusive of all aviators and missions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The language we use in aerospace matters,&#8221; FAA <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAANews\/status\/1481744002244386818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tweet<\/a> From its official account. &#8220;We\u2019ve begun to adopt gender-neutral and inclusive aviation terminology as part of our agency-wide initiative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear why the system failed overnight, but the White House said there was no evidence of a cyberattack. Buttigieg said Wednesday he didn\u2019t know how the system crashed and ordered a root cause analysis to determine the cause of the failure. &#8220;Glitches or complications happen all the time,&#8221; MSNBC: Buttigieg spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The air safety system\u2019s name change came months after an FAA advisory committee issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/24\/us\/faa-gender-neutral-drones.html?smtyp=cur&#038;smid=tw-nytimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report<\/a> The advisory committee recommended to the agency that a large number of words and phrases be replaced with gender-neutral terms in June 2021. The advisory committee suggested that the agency replace a wide range of words and phrases with gender-neutral terms to combat bias and reflect a more inclusive society. &#8220;more modern recognition that gender can be binary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Recommendations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/24\/us\/faa-gender-neutral-drones.html?smtyp=cur&#038;smid=tw-nytimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Included<\/a> replacing &#8220;airman&#8221; With &#8220;aircrew,&#8221; &#8220;manned aviation&#8221; With &#8220;traditional aviation,&#8221; And &#8220;cockpit&#8221; With &#8220;flight deck.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The FAA listened to the suggestions.
