According to the FAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2023\/01\/11\/faa-notam-outage-flights-us\/#link-BNHE6U5MMJEPDNJJOSZIVIIFMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>It began yesterday afternoon Eastern Time<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>According to the FAA, the outage occurred on Tuesday night at 8:28 PM UTC. The cause of the problem was not immediately known. After the system failed, \u201cno new NOTAMs or amendments have been processed,\u201d The FAA stated. NOTAM stands for Notable Arrangements of Management. \u201cNotice to Air Missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Universal time, also known as Greenwich Mean Time in the past, is five hours ahead Eastern Time. That means the system went down approximately at 3:30 ET yesterday afternoon, and it\u2019s still not up. That in itself raises some interesting questions, to which we\u2019ll return shortly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/01\/11\/business\/faa-flights-grounded\/faa-outage-flights-grounded?smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times reported<\/a> Just a moment ago, the system was \u201cbeginning to come back,\u201d But even though it happens quickly, the cascade effect will continue to reverberate at minimum for 24 hours.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul class=\"live-blog-post-content css-1ie9vib ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">F.A.A. The F.A.A. ordered all domestic flights to be halted until 9 a.m. Eastern Time. \u201cto allow the agency to validate the integrity of flight and safety information,\u201d It said so in a statement. According to FlightAware (a flight tracking service), more than 2,500 flights into, out, and within the United States were delayed Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">Multiple airlines were affected by the delays, which spread throughout the country. United Airlines stated in a statement that all domestic flights were temporarily delayed and would update the F.A.A. when more information becomes available. American Airlines confirmed the situation \u201cimpacts all airlines\u201d It was. \u201cworking with the F.A.A. to minimize disruption to our operation and customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>NBC\u2019s Tom Costello reminded\u00a0<em>Today <\/em>Last week&#8217;s disruption was only visible to Florida air traffic. The disruption took several hours to fix and, thanks to the highly-connected commercial air travel system of Florida, also had a significant impact on travel in other areas.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few questions that this raises, such as whether this is a regular computer problem or something entirely different. Is Florida the first victim of a cyberattack? The White House says they have no evidence that this is an intentional attack on the FAA\u2019s systems, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/01\/11\/business\/faa-flights-grounded\/50b7f4ff-73ed-50ae-a07a-6e3086cd01f2?smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neither does anyone.<\/a> What is the real cause of the outage?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t know what the cause is,\u201d After speaking with Pete Buttigieg (Transportation Secretary), President Biden spoke to reporters about the F.A.A. outage. \u201cAircraft can still land safely, just not take off right now. They don\u2019t know what the cause of it is, they expect in a couple of hours they\u2019ll have a good sense of what caused it and will respond at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spent last Wednesday blaming Southwest Airlines for its system failures that left thousands of travelers stranded. At least, he seems to have no answers as of the last few hours.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I spoke to FAA about the outage that affected a critical system that provides safety information to pilots. FAA is working quickly and safely to resolve the issue so that air traffic can resume normal operation. The following questions will be asked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is this the same type of failure that affected Florida last week?<\/li>\n<li>What has Transportation done in order to modernize its systems and teach Southwest about their maintenance and modernization?<\/li>\n<li>Why is it taking so much time to restore normal operation?<\/li>\n<li>Is Buttigieg addressing any remaining issues in this mission-critical NOTAM program?<\/li>\n<li>Why did it take so many days for people to learn of the failure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We may soon have some answers. We\u2019ll update this post as necessary if they do. Meantime, if you\u2019re flying today, better have your contingency plans at the ready.
