Biden assumed office in 2021. At the time, it was reported that the president intended to fire him despite the fact that he was unanimously confirmed by his Senate colleagues. The news of the planned termination drew criticism from both\u00a0parties, as Democratic Illinois Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin expressed dismay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we agree with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/biden-admin-partially-rescinds-trump-conscience-health-care-proposal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden Administration\u2019s<\/a> criminal justice agenda, we are disappointed with the decision to terminate U.S. Attorney Lausch without consulting us,&#8221; the two senators from Lausch\u2019s home state said in a joint statement.\u00a0&#8220;In 2017, our non-partisan screening committee\u00a0gave its support for Mr. Lausch to serve in this position, and the Senate confirmed him unanimously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Durbin and Duckworth added that there was precedent for individuals in Lausch\u2019s position to stay in office after a new administration took over &#8220;to conclude sensitive investigations.&#8221; They asked Biden to allow Lausch to continue until a replacement was found.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/doj-taps-trump-appointed-attorney-investigate-classified-documents-found-biden-think-tank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DOJ TAPS TRUMP APPOINTED ATTORNEY IN INVESTIGATION OF CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS FOUND ON BIDEN THINK TANK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-ct inline\">\n<div class=\"m\"><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 767px) and (max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px) and (max-width: 1279px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/640\/320\/AG.jpg?ve=1&#038;tl=1\" alt=\"U.S. Attorney John Lausch\"   style=\"display:none\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p>\n John Lausch, U.S. Attorney\n      <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Illinois Republican Reps. Darin LaHood and Mary Miller issued a similar statement at that time. They noted that Lausch had been involved in the middle of &#8220;pursuing a historic and major public corruption investigation involving a years-long bribery scheme that has implicated former House Speaker Michael Madigan and others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lausch was ultimately spared and allowed stay in his position.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dems-defend-biden-classified-documents-handling-call-outrage-republican-hypocrisy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DEMS DEFEND BIDEN CLASSIFIED DOCMENTS HANDLING CALL OUTRAGE \u2018REPUBLICAN HYPOCRISY\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fox News reached out to the White House for comment on Lausch\u2019s new appointment and the circumstances surrounding the reported planned termination and his remaining in office.\u00a0They didn&#8217;t immediately respond.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Lausch will lead the investigation of the documents at the Penn Biden Center \u2013 some of which were marked classified \u2013 that were dated from Biden\u2019s time as vice president.
