Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The recall effort cannot formally begin until Gasc\u00f3n has been in office for 90 days,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-02-27\/group-plans-to-launch-recall-effort-against-newly-elected-l-a-dist-atty-george-gascon\"><span>according<\/span><\/a> <span>to the L.A. Times. Once 90 days have passed, organizers must gather 20 signatures and submit a notice of intent. Once the notice has been approved, organizers will need to collect roughly 580,00 valid signatures, the equivalent of 10% of the number of L.A. residents who voted in the last election, within 160 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gasc\u00f3n was sworn in on December 7, 2020, a day he observed would \u201cusher in a new era of criminal justice, and transform the largest criminal justice jurisdiction in America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The policy changes he announced that day included the end of cash bail, the end of sentencing enhancements<\/span> <span>\u2014<\/span> <span>which he called a \u201clegacy of the \u2018tough-on-crime\u2019 era\u201d<\/span> <span>\u2014<\/span> <span>the end of the three-strikes policy, and the end to prosecutors seeking the death penalty, a punished that Gasc\u00f3n called \u201cracist, morally untenable, irreversible, and expensive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The money bail system is as unsafe as it is unjust.<\/p>\n<p>Money is a terrible proxy for risk posed to society.<\/p>\n<p>So today we will end cash bail for any misdemeanor, non-serious or non-violent felony offense.<\/p>\n<p>And I will end bail completely January 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Gasc\u00f3n (@GeorgeGascon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeorgeGascon\/status\/1336050940952989696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Enhancements, a legacy of the \u201ctough-on-crime\u201d era, are a principal driver of excessive sentences &#038; mass incarceration.<\/p>\n<p>CA enacted over 100 enhancements which are outdated, incoherent, &#038; applied unfairly.<\/p>\n<p>To end mass incarceration in LA we will cease filing ALL enhancements.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Gasc\u00f3n (@GeorgeGascon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeorgeGascon\/status\/1336050942567796737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">CA\u2019s 1994 3 Strikes Law has been a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980 CA had a prison pop of ~23,000.<\/p>\n<p>In 1990, that number grew to ~94,000.<\/p>\n<p>And In 1999, 5 years after passage of 3 Strikes, CA\u2018s prison population ballooned to 160,000 souls.<\/p>\n<p>3 strikes ends in my office beginning today.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Gasc\u00f3n (@GeorgeGascon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeorgeGascon\/status\/1336050943398268928?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>As<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/orange-county-d-a-says-if-l-a-countys-gascon-wont-seek-justice-for-slain-six-year-old-he-wants-the-case\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a> <span>previously reported, \u201cA Los Angeles judge recently<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/judge-issues-injunction-blocking-several-directives-from-l-a-countys-new-controversial-d-a\"><span>issued<\/span><\/a> <span>a preliminary injunction temporarily barring Gasc\u00f3n from directing prosecutors to drop sentencing enhancements in active cases,\u201d a response to a lawsuit from the Los Angeles Association of Deputy District Attorney\u2019s, which represents the nearly 1,000 deputy district attorneys who work under Gasc\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Only days later, Gasc\u00f3n announced that he was resigning from the California District Attorney\u2019s Association, which filed an amicus brief in the case L.A. organization\u2019s case against him, and criticized the California association for not having \u201ca single person of color\u201d on their board.
