This led to FAA officials blocking signals from temporary buffer zones at 50 airports last year.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, airline leaders warned that there would be a disruption in the air travel industry. \u201ccatastrophic\u201d A 5G deployment could lead to an aviation crisis which could result in almost no traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SC-239-5G-Interference-Assessment-Report_274-20-PMC-2073_accepted_changes.pdf\">Report<\/a> This was evident in October 2020. \u201cthat the risk will be widespread and has the potential for broad impacts to aviation operations in the United States, including the possibility of catastrophic failures leading to multiple fatalities, in the absence of appropriate mitigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports from earlier this year suggested that 5G service could have affected airplane altimeters height data, and landing attempts in inclement conditions. This may have caused disruptions at some U.S. airfields.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Airplane flight manuals could be subject to revision under another proposal from the FAA to\u00a0prohibit low-visibility landings after June 30 unless the airplane crews have already retrofitted such components.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, Airlines for America, a trade association representing American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and other airlines, stated that \u201ccarriers are working diligently to ensure fleets are equipped with compliant radio altimeters, but global supply chains continue to lag behind current demand. Any government deadline must consider this reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following is an extract from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/5g\">FAA<\/a>Nearly 90% of U.S. airports are equipped with an updated altimeter or have been verified to fly in the 5G C band signal.<\/p>\n<p>CTIA, a wireless communications company, told Reuters \u201cthe FAA\u2019s schedule for altimeter updates is reasonable and practical. 5G in the C-band co-exists safely with air traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CNET <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/faa-wants-us-airplanes-to-be-5g-safe-by-2024\/\">reported<\/a> After posting the directive in the Federal Register, officials will make the directive available for public comments for a period of 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>The directive as proposed would be effective in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p>FAA officials suggested a similar directive for December 2021.
