They should also refer teenagers 13 years old and over who have severe obesity to them. \u201cfor metabolic and bariatric surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These guidelines represent the first complete outline that will be presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/news-room\/news-releases\/aap\/2022\/american-academy-of-pediatrics-issues-its-first-comprehensive-guideline-on-evaluating-treating-children-and-adolescents-with-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AAP<\/a> In 15 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWeight is a sensitive topic for most of us, and children and teens are especially aware of the harsh and unfair stigma that comes with being affected by it,\u201d Sarah Hampl MD was the guide&#8217;s lead author.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A statement from the AAP on obesity prevention has not yet been released. This is because it is not covered in the new guidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere is no evidence that \u2018watchful waiting\u2019 or delayed treatment is appropriate for children with obesity,\u201d Sandra Hassink MD, author of the guidance also stated. \u201cThe goal is to help patients make changes in lifestyle, behaviors or environment in a way that is sustainable and involves families in decision-making at every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) estimates that 19.7% of children aged between 2017 and 2020 will be affected by the disease. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/childhood.html#:~:text=Prevalence%20of%20Childhood%20Obesity%20in%20the%20United%20States&#038;text=The%20prevalence%20of%20obesity%20was,to%2019-year-olds.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Between<\/a> Between the ages 2 and 19, approximately 14.7 million children and teens were obese.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Children in the United States continue to feel the impact of the coronavirus epidemic and the forced closures of schools that it accompanied. It had a detrimental effect on childhood obesity. The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7037a3.htm?s_cid=mm7037a3_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Study<\/a> Starting in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2021\/09\/17\/1038211236\/weight-gain-obesity-children-teens-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shown<\/a> That the body mass index rate has increased \u201capproximately doubled during the pandemic\u201d The spikes in mortality were significantly higher than those experienced during the previous pandemic. The largest spikes occurred for those who were obese or overweight before the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe now have evidence that obesity therapy is effective. There is treatment, and now is the time to recognize that obesity is a chronic disease and should be addressed as we address other chronic diseases,\u201d Hassink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/kids-health\/new-guidelines-treating-childhood-obesity-include-medications-surgery-rcna64651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Not noted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObesity is not a lifestyle problem.
