She\u2019s well-known for likely saving Captain John Smith from being executed. Disney animated the story in 1995. \u201cPocahontas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a direct paper trail, no doubt about it, connection to your 12th great-grandmother and great-grandfather, John Rolfe and Pocahontas,\u201d Norton was informed by Henry Louis Gates Jr. historian host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/finding-your-roots-edward-norton-julia-roberts-slave-owner-ancestors-1235291024\/\">per<\/a> The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<p>Gates is well-known for his contributions to the world of finance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/national\/obama-legacy\/henry-louis-gates-jr-arrest-controversy.html\">participation<\/a> in President Barack Obama\u2019s \u201cbeer summit\u201d 2009: Pocahontas&#8217; death in Jamestown, Virginia in 1617, just three years after his marriage to Rolfe was noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about as far back as you can go, unless you\u2019re a Viking,\u201d Norton spoke of the discovery. \u201cMakes you realize what a small piece of the whole human story you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But The actor wasn\u2019t thrilled about some other details he learned. Norton did some of his own research before appearing on the show and discovered that his third-great-grandfather, John Winstead, owned a family of slaves, including a mother, father, and five daughters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you read \u2018slave aged eight,\u2019 you just want to die,\u201d the \u201cGlass Onion\u201d Actor spoke of his findings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe short answer is these things are uncomfortable. And you should be uncomfortable with them,\u201d Norton continued. \u201cIt\u2019s not a judgment on you in your own life but it\u2019s a judgment on the history of this country and it needs to be acknowledged first and foremost and then it needs to be contended with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides those individuals, Norton also discovered on the show that he was related to a wealthy iron manufacturer-turned-Union soldier who wrote to Abraham Lincoln, and a late 19th-century pro-union labor activist involved in the Pullman Strike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The same season 9 premiere episode also traced Julia Roberts\u2019 roots and found that her ancestors were slave owners, too.
