She was the first transgender woman executed in America. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZpQTXojfRH\">https:\/\/t.co\/ZpQTXojfRH<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EQWdHjtYGS\">pic.twitter.com\/EQWdHjtYGS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 FOX4 News Kansas City (@fox4kc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fox4kc\/status\/1610447478389612551?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 4, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His death is thought to be the first execution of an openly\u00a0trans-identifying male in U.S. history.\u00a0There were no court appeals pending in McLaughlin\u2019s case, according to his attorney, Larry Komp.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before his death, Missouri Governor Mike Parson, a Republican, denied McLaughlin\u2019s clemency request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMcLaughlin terrorized Ms. Guenther in the final years of her life, but we hope her family and loved ones may finally have some peace,\u201d Parson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/crime\/2023\/01\/03\/first-us-trans-inmate-execute-missouri-death-amber-mclaughlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> In a statement following execution.<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin was also arrested for burglarizing Beverly Guenther&#8217;s home, just before he killed her. He was placed under restraining orders.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, McLaughlin repeatedly stalked Guenther\u2019s suburban St. Louis office, sometimes even hiding inside the building, court documents state. Police officers sometimes escorted Guenther\u00a0to her car after work.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the murder,\u00a0McLaughlin waited for Guenther outside her office and attacked her with a steak knife. McLaughlin repeatedly stabbed and raped Guenther before dropping her body in the Mississippi River near St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>When Guenther didn&#8217;t return home from work that night, neighbors called the police. Police found a blood trail and a broken knife handle at Guenther&#8217;s office. McLaughlin led police the next day to where he had dumped his body near the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n<p>About three years ago while in prison awaiting execution, McLaughlin began identifying and presenting as female, dressing in women\u2019s clothes and wearing makeup. McLaughlin never received hormone therapy. <a href=\"https:\/\/fox2now.com\/news\/missouri\/missouri-executes-convicted-murderer-amber-mclaughlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> His attorney. He continued to be housed in a men\u2019s prison, the\u00a0Potosi Correctional Center south of St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin was supported by allies up to the day of McLaughlin&#8217;s death <a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/petitions\/stop-the-execution-of-amber-mclaughlin-in-missouri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushing<\/a> For his execution to be stopped. Allies <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_breeeeen_\/status\/1609768529355489287?cxt=HHwWjoCyrdr8hdcsAAAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> In solidarity, he asked for pink lipstick and nail polish to be worn by supporters.<\/p>\n<p>A petition for clemency signed by many thousand people mentioned evidence that McLaughlin was subject to abuse as a child, severe depression, and numerous suicide attempts. Missouri and Indiana are both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/missouri-inmate-would-be-first-openly-transgender-person-executed-in-nation\/article_80bbb35b-34f0-5281-861c-224e7a99f47d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only states<\/a> This allows a judge to overrule a jury that has failed to agree on a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge overturned McLaughlin&#8217;s death sentence in 2016 and ordered McLaughlin to be sent back for a fresh hearing.
