Based on the evidence collected, investigators developed probable cause to believe this incident was an intentional act,\u201d California Highway Patrol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CHPSanFrancisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> In a statement issued Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the patrol, Dharmesh Patel is the driver. \u201chas been placed under arrest for attempted murder and child abuse.\u201d The passengers were \u201ctransported to a local hospital with serious injuries,\u201d According to the statement. Officials have not commented on the relationship between the individuals in the car. The Daily Mail reported however that they had received a copy of the Daily Mail. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11598475\/PICTURED-Doctor-intentionally-drove-family-cliff-Tesla.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Patel\u2019s wife and children were the occupants and that Patel is a radiologist at a medical center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere has been no determination as to what driving mode the Tesla was in; however, that does not appear to be a contributing factor in this incident,\u201d The statement was complete. After leaving the hospital, Patel was taken to San Mateo County Jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Officer Andrew Barclay, a spokesman for the highway patrol\u2019s Golden Gate Division, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/tesla-driver-plunged-family-california-cliff-purpose-officials-say-rcna64170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Patel will be charged with child abuse and attempted murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Officials stated that the man deliberately drove the car off the edge of the cliff to kill two children inside and one adult. After the vehicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-man-intentionally-drove-tesla-off-cliff-another-adult-2-kids-car-authorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drove<\/a> Take off \u201cDevil\u2019s Slide\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/04\/us\/tesla-crash-cliff-california-driver-arrested\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cliff<\/a>Around 10:50 Monday morning, witnesses to the accident dialed 911. Firefighters responded to the call and rappelled down the terrain to rescue the children. The rescue involved helicopter crews. Emergency personnel were called to rescue the passengers from the vehicle. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-man-intentionally-drove-tesla-off-cliff-another-adult-2-kids-car-authorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used<\/a> \u201cjaws of life\u201d equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Brian Pottenger, battalion commander for Coastside Fire Protection District\/Cal Fire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/tesla-driver-plunged-family-california-cliff-purpose-officials-say-rcna64170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> It was \u201cvery, very rare\u201d for people to live through a steep drop like that, adding that the children\u2019s car seats might have made the difference between life and death for the kids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cEvery one of us was shocked when we saw movement out of the front windshield,\u201d Pottenger said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c[The children] were more scared than they were hurt,\u201d He concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe were actually very shocked when we found survivable victims in the vehicle. So that actually was a hopeful moment for us,\u201d Pottenger <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CALFIRECZU\/status\/1610075687981023233?s=20&#038;t=EXPgUF7_oEaoRcL15J2Zmg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> In a video posted on Twitter Monday<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A vehicle carrying 2 adults and 2 minors crossed the cliff at Devil&#8217;s Slide. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sanmateoco?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sanmateoco<\/a>. Witnesses witnessed the accident and dialled 911. The car fell hundreds of feet from the cliff to land on the beach. All four victims were successfully rescued.
