An investigation by Daily Wire found five other Gallagher former patients, who ranged in weight from overweight to obese. \u201csuper morbid obese\u201d All of them claimed that they had experienced similar complications after chest surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Medical professionals who spoke to The Daily Wire on condition of anonymity were alarmed to learn of a pattern of alleged complications among Gallagher\u2019s obese patients and drew comparisons between her Miami-based practice and other forms of \u201cplastic surgery tourism\u201d The South Florida city is well-known for its reputation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rylan, a biological female who flew to Miami from Ohio in October to undergo a double mastectomy surgery by Gallagher, said the doctor\u2019s willingness to operate on patients regardless of their BMI (body mass index), a clinical measure for body-fat percentage or distribution, guided the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks after the surgery, Rylan\u2019s wounds reopened, became infected, and required an emergency room visit. Rylan asserts that Gallagher is responsible <a href=\"https:\/\/rylan545.medium.com\/top-surgery-with-dr-gallagher-almost-cost-me-my-life-d68cda71c543\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disputed<\/a> It was determined that the wounds were either infected or required hospital treatment. Rylan was eventually required to remove six inches worth of necrotic tissue. \u201calmost cost me my life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Rylan\u2019s story went viral, the transgender community turned on Gallagher, who had previously been seen as an ally. A private, 32,000-member group on Facebook was created for this purpose. \u201ctop surgery\u201d patients, discussion of Rylan\u2019s story prompted other former patients of Gallagher to come forward with graphic photos and descriptions of their alleged complications from surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher&#8217;s former patients, who were all either overweight, obese or morbidly obese, said that they also needed hospitalization, urgent treatment, or antibiotic treatment when their wounds reopened or became infected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plastic surgeons typically won\u2019t perform elective surgeries on obese people when their weight heightens the risk of dangerous complications. A high BMI is linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5881295\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased<\/a> There are higher chances of infection and poor wound healing due to surgery. Gallagher, however, will <a href=\"https:\/\/gallagherplasticsurgery.com\/gender-confirmation-surgery\/female-to-male-procedures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operate<\/a> Her published research on patients of all weights shows that around <a href=\"https:\/\/sci-hub.se\/10.1097\/SAP.0000000000001810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54%<\/a> Most of her patients have obesity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an effort to be as inclusive as possible we do not have an absolute cutoff BMI requirement for patients who are interested in undergoing top surgery,\u201d A section of her <a href=\"https:\/\/gallagherplasticsurgery.com\/gender-confirmation-surgery\/female-to-male-procedures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> dedicat to \u201cHigh Body Mass Index Patients\u201d states.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that transgender women are more likely to be obese than biological women. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/endocrinology\/20191202\/obesity-persists-as-surgery-barrier-among-transgender-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> It was found that over a quarter of transgender adults are seeking out \u201cgender affirming\u201d Surgery were considered ineligible because they are obese. Another recent example: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bidmc.org\/about-bidmc\/news\/2021\/08\/study-reveals-gender-affirming-hormone-therapies-impact-obesity-transgender-individuals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> It was found that 39% (of trans-identifying females) who sought testosterone treatment were obese. This number increased to 42-52% when treatment began.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire\u2019s investigation found that many of Gallagher\u2019s former top surgery patients flew to Miami from out of state and even out of the country because they had difficulty finding local surgeons willing to operate on them due to their weight.<\/p>\n<p>The transgender community has dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/u\/1\/d\/1df6XlLzRpOxYwOQGqsOvibY6q4yXo-ljtujtft8KG4A\/htmlview?fbclid=IwAR1NqYQuuV7CoVLzpuVjgwG12jlhxnJ-8rRUK4IjU4ZFZw4Yalu8EeSyxFA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lists<\/a>, threads and other resources, such as the \u201cTransBMI\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transbmi.com\/?fbclid=IwAR07W3CmPMI6Y-52rF4-fKxIJ7hjOcyhb7wtZMRRk4U8G47qdCVo0TtXOmQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> They are dedicated to helping obese people find the right resources. \u201cgender affirming\u201d There are surgeons that can operate on anyone&#8217;s weight. Attitudes \u201ctop surgery\u201d Influenced by Facebook groups \u201cfat acceptance\u201d social justice movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While some former patients of Gallagher \u2013 usually ones in the normal to overweight BMI range \u2013 reported no complications from their surgeries, others who were in the overweight to super-morbidly obese range had much different experiences.<\/p>\n<p>One patient with a BMI 56.8 from Oregon (classified as \u201csuper morbid obesity\u201dAfter a 25-pound weight loss, a local surgeon recommended Gallagher to perform a double mastectomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t get me started on how awfully antiquated BMI is,\u201d the patient wrote at the time on the Facebook group\u2019s page. Other people shared her sentiments with comments like \u201cBMI is fake science\u201d And \u201cBMI is outdated and inaccurate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher performed the surgery at Coral Gables Hospital because the patient&#8217;s BMI was high. The patient could be monitored over night at Coral Gables Hospital instead of an outpatient surgical center.
