The 64-year old is now reflecting on his first major project and how Jack Nicholson treated him.<\/p>\n<p>Burton talked about his time working alongside Nicholson who played The Joker, in the 1989 classic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/movies\">Batman<\/a>.\u201d First, he informed Empire that the \u201cTerms of Endearment\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/entertainment\">star<\/a> It was hard to communicate with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJack has a very abstract way of speaking. So he would say things to me and I\u2019d go, \u2018Yeah, I get it,\u2019 and then I\u2019d go to someone, \u2018What the f*** was he just talking about?\u201d\u2018 Burton told the publication. \u201cSo there was this weird communication: non-linear, non-connective \u2026 But it was very clear to me. I felt like we had a good sort of caveman-style communication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that point in his career, the director had only made \u201cPee Wee\u2019s Big Adventure\u201d in 1985 and \u201cBeetlejuice\u201d 1988. Burton explained that not everyone was in agreement with his vision. \u201cBatman,\u201d But Nicholson was his source of support, confidence and encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Nicholson] protected me and nurtured me, kept me going, by just not getting too overwhelmed with the whole thing. I felt really supported by him in a very deep way,\u201d Burton explained the following during an interview: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-11597769\/Director-Tim-Burton-barely-understand-Jack-Nicholson-Batman-set.html\">per<\/a> The Daily Mail<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was young and dealing with a big studio, and he just quietly gave me the confidence to do what I needed to do. And him being a voice of support had a lot of resonance with the studio. It got me through the whole thing. It gave me strength,\u201d The director was nominated for an award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBatman\u201d It was a huge success at the box-office, earning $251 million domestically and over $400 million worldwide with a budget of $40 million.<\/p>\n<p>Empire spoke with Burton previously about the newest. \u201cBatman\u201d Film returns to darker themes, like The Daily Wire before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/you-put-nipples-on-the-costume-go-fk-yourself-tim-burton-unloads-on-batman-franchise\">reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is funny to see this now, because all these memories come back of, \u2018It\u2019s too dark,\u2019\u201d Burton expressed his disappointment at the film&#8217;s follow-up. \u201cBatman Returns.\u201d \u201cSo, it makes me laugh a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Back then] they went the other way,\u201d he continued, referencing Joel Schumacher\u2019s campy, over-the-top movies \u201cBatman Forever\u201d  \u201cBatman &#038; Robin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the funny thing about it. But then I was like, \u2018Wait a minute. Okay. Hold on a second here. You complain about me, I\u2019m too weird, I\u2019m too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume? Go f*** yourself.\u2019 Seriously.
