The negotiations seem to be stuck at this point.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bringing-down-the-house-mccarthy-falters-in-quest-to-become-speaker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held out on Tuesday<\/a> McCarthy supported them and they were then compared to petulant children or even the Taliban. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/01\/03\/house-gop-freedom-caucus-mccarthy-00076268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some reports<\/a>. They may want to select a conservative speaker who is more focused on fiscal spending or social issues. Rep. Chip Roy (R.TX) has more specific requests. He wants votes on items like term limits or border security.<\/p>\n<p>All of them have not changed their stance against McCarthy thus far.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy insists for his part that he won&#8217;t step aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, is that the day I wanted to have? No,\u201d McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/politics\/kevin-mccarthy-house-speaker\/2023\/01\/04\/id\/1102967\/\">told<\/a> Reporters late Tuesday night, adding that dropping out is a good idea. \u201cnot going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems the message to those still holding out is \u201cget in line and shut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the holdouts claim that the anti-McCarthy alliance has not offered viable alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>This is true. But, the cause could also be the way \u201cthe swamp\u201d works. As Roy explained, D.C. doesn\u2019t exactly reward individuals who take a stand against those in charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe swamp doesn\u2019You can&#8217;t make for \u2018fielding viable alternatives\u2019 w\/o pressure \u2013 see, e.g., threats this morning to yank people from committees who aren\u2019t \u2018in line,&#8217;\u201d Roy tweeted. \u201cWe (conservatives) b**** about how broken DC is, but then some force a fight to change it, &#038; people get squeamish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The swamp doesn\u2019t make for \u201cfielding viable alternatives\u201d w\/o pressure \u2013 see, e.g., threats this morning to yank people from committees who aren\u2019t \u201cin line.\u201d The Conservatives mutter about DC&#8217;s ills, but then they force it to be changed, and people are squeamish. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3NJ3lgqrkO\">https:\/\/t.co\/3NJ3lgqrkO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chip Roy (@chiproytx) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chiproytx\/status\/1610537158003097600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 4, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others in the know claim that McCarthy&#8217;s opposition is not real <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RyanGirdusky\/status\/1610493088882999296?s=20&#038;t=o_9-PN_w37vb65HmGSbqbw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personal<\/a> \u2014 and that potential alternatives, such as Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA) or Jim Jordan (R-OH), might be worse.<\/p>\n<p>There are concerns, for example, that Scalise might be too soft on amnesty or that Jordan is too supportive of a Big Tech industry bent on crushing conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that argument has merit, and McCarthy\u2019s lack of ideological principles may be advantageous. McCarthy might be more convincing than anyone else that the only way to keep power in Washington is to appease the Freedom Caucus or GOP base.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I understand why people don\u2019t trust McCarthy because he doesn\u2019t believe in anything\u2026 but honestly, that\u2019s a good thing not a bad one.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan and Boehner couldn\u2019t be bought by the right. They hated the majority of the base and it was impossible to move them. Donalds, a rising Republican, explained his change via Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is Rep. Kevin McCarthy doesn\u2019t have the votes,\u201d He tweeted. \u201cI committed my support to him publicly and for two votes on the House Floor. 218 is the number, and currently, no one is there. Our conference needs to recess and huddle and find someone or work out the next step but these continuous votes aren\u2019t working for anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three rounds of votes were lost Tuesday for McCarthy. Today, more votes are expected. Donalds wants the party to get back together at the table and discuss the matter rather than continue as usual.<\/p>\n<p>Some have fretted that Republicans may be pushed out of the speaker\u2019s office completely if this trend continues.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the idea that a Democrat would wind up speaker is nonsensical \u2014 no Republican will vote for Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) unless they want to commit political suicide.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">but these continuous votes aren\u2019t working for anyone. After the dust settles we will have a Republican speaker.
