Artemis II could not come to pass until 2024 or 2025 because of the bureaucracy of big government, and an outdated approach to getting back to the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNASA\u2019s big problem, however, isn\u2019t the fiscal blowback from a decision made out of necessity way back in 2013,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/vodkapundit\/2022\/12\/12\/artemis-i-was-a-complete-success-but-about-that-followup-mission-n1652867#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote PJ Media\u2019s brilliant and perceptive Vodkapundit last month<\/a>. \u201cThe problem is that NASA\u2026 should have torn up every spaceflight and spaceship plan they had back in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The problem we\u2019re facing right now is bigger than a lack of interest that could result from a slow-moving space program. The issue is that we\u2019re in a space race where the stakes are potentially higher than they were in the \u201960s. It\u2019s not as public as the original space race was, but we\u2019re going toe-to-toe with China.<\/p>\n<p>If you think that sounds dramatic, let\u2019s see what NASA administrator Bill Nelson has to say about it.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>For our VIPs:<\/strong> <a class=\"search-item-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/vodkapundit\/2022\/12\/12\/artemis-i-was-a-complete-success-but-about-that-followup-mission-n1652867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis I Was a Complete Success, but About That Followup Mission\u2026<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a fact: we\u2019re in a space race,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/01\/01\/we-better-watch-out-nasa-boss-sounds-alarm-on-chinese-moon-ambitions-00075803\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nelson told Politico in an interview<\/a>. \u201cAnd it is true that we better watch out that they don\u2019t get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, \u2018Keep out, we\u2019re here, this is our territory.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China has ambitious plans to reach the Moon by the end of this decade and to build out its infrastructure. \u201ccreating a space governance system,\u201d According to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t think that the Chinese wouldn\u2019t use dominance in space for belligerent purposes.\u00a0The U.S. military is concerned about this possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s entirely possible they could catch up and surpass us, absolutely,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/china-poses-increasing-threat-military-space-race-top-us-general-says-2022-11-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen. Nina Armagno of the U.S. Space Force said in November<\/a>. \u201cThe progress they\u2019ve made has been stunning, stunningly fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China \u201cis the only country with both the intent to reshape the international order and increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to achieve that objective,\u201d She added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is potentially mischief China can do on the moon,\u201d Terry Virts, a former astronaut and Air Force colonel, spoke out to Politico. \u201cIf they set up infrastructure there they could potentially deny communications, for example. Having them there doesn\u2019t make things easier. There is real concern about Chinese meddling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China, on the other hand, insists that \u201couter space is not a wrestling ground,\u201d but it\u2019s not at all difficult to imagine China using the moon, Mars, or a space station for nefarious purposes, even at a whim. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important for the U.S. to step up its game in this space race.<\/p>\n<p>Congress agreed to most of NASA\u2019s funding requests in the recent budget, but time is more important than money. Nelson states that Artemis II could happen \u201cwithin two years\u201d And that \u201chopefully we can speed that up.\u201d What can the Chinese do when we play with the Artemis program for several months?<\/p>\n<p>NASA should collaborate with private space ventures like SpaceX or Blue Origin. Anything that can help China defeat the U.S. will be able to buy time and increase efficiency in its space program.
