The clemency request focused on several issues, including McLaughlin\u2019s traumatic childhood and mental health issues, which the jury never heard in her trial. She is said to be depressed and has attempted suicide several times. <\/p>\n<p>The petition also included reports citing a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, a condition that causes anguish and other symptoms as a result of a disparity between a person\u2019s gender identity and their assigned sex at birth. <\/p>\n<p>Parson&#8217;s office however, denied Parson&#8217;s request for clemency. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/03\/us\/amber-mclaughlin-missouri-execution\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> Beverly Guenther, the victim&#8217;s family, gave a statement stating that they were sorry for her loss. \u201cdeserve peace.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>According to the Anti-Execution Death Penalty Information Center there was never an openly transgender case in which an American inmate was executed. <\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin had been in a relationship before he was sent to prison. According to court records, McLaughlin would sometimes hide inside the building where Guenther, 45, worked in suburban St. Louis. Guenther received a restraining ordeal and was sometimes escorted by police to her car. <\/p>\n<p>Guenther\u2019s neighbors called police the night of Nov. 20, 2003, when she failed to return home. Officers reached the office building and found Guenther with a broken knife handle near her vehicle, as well as a trail of blood. McLaughlin subsequently led police to the location near the Mississippi River. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/st-louis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Louis<\/a>There was a graveyard where the body was found. <\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin was found guilty of first-degree murder <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/murder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murder<\/a> In 2006. McLaughlin was sentenced to death by a judge after the jury failed to reach agreement on his sentence.
