A segment called for greater gun control. It was compared to traffic laws, and falsely suggested that the average American gun owner is more armed than those who are in war.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Busse is a media favorite gun owner and supports gun control. Velshi addressed Velshi with a statement, not a question.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ryan, you come from an\u00a0industry, and I&#8217;m an avid\u00a0consumer of the publications\u00a0that come out from the industry,\u00a0because they are so interesting\u00a0to understand how the psyche\u00a0comes around, that has built\u00a0the psyche over years, that has\u00a0caused demand for guns that, in\u00a0most cases, people don&#8217;t need.\u00a0This is not a Second Amendment\u00a0thing.\u00a0This is people owning a lot of\u00a0guns, and the paraphernalia\u00a0that goes along with it because\u00a0it does attempt to normalize\u00a0that sort of behavior.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A recent incident was referred to in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/02\/us\/atlanta-gun-laws.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta<\/a>. Busse lamented, \u201cthe tragedy isn&#8217;t what&#8217;s illegal,\u00a0the tragedy here is what is\u00a0legal.\u00a0And as you note, this guy\u00a0didn&#8217;t need six loaded guns,\u00a0including an AR and a tactical\u00a0shotgun to go grocery shopping,\u00a0right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sought then an analogy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But yet, Georgia is one of the\u00a0states that [Brady President] Kris [Brown] mentioned that\u00a0has recently rolled back\u00a0concealed carry permitting.\u00a0I mean, I think Americans really need\u00a0to think about it this way.\u00a0We have about 270 million\u00a0registered vehicles in the\u00a0United States, and you don&#8217;t\u00a0have to travel on many of our\u00a0roads to know it seems pretty\u00a0crowded.\u00a0There are many traffic laws in America.\u00a0We&#8217;ve got lines on the road,\u00a0we&#8217;ve got bumpers, we&#8217;ve got\u00a0speed limits, we&#8217;ve got police\u00a0that are patrolling everything.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Although there are many traffic laws, speeding, running red lights, and unsafe lane changes can still lead to serious collisions. Busse stated that gun violence is primarily due to poor traffic laws. \u201cthe NRA and the NSSF\u00a0and an irresponsible slice of\u00a0the American gun consumers, of\u00a0which I&#8217;m not one of those, I&#8217;m\u00a0a proud gun owner, I hunted yesterday with my boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after Busse was finished, Velshi turned his attention to Brown, and he wondered. \u201cBut how do we get folks to\u00a0understand this, that when\u00a0people say it&#8217;s about the\u00a0Second Amendment, and the right\u00a0to self-defense, people in war\u00a0don&#8217;t carry the weapons that\u00a0the average American has?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/reboot\/please-stop-calling-ar-15-weapon-war-179987\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">simply not true<\/a> This will not become true just because MSNBC has repeated it 1000 times. Brown tried to make it seem like that was:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Actually, my partner is retired Navy.\u00a0He was a fighter pilot and before I came on today, Ali, I\u00a0talked to him about what his\u00a0requirements were flying over Bosnia, for example.\u00a0He was issued a gun every time\u00a0he left the carrier, and had to\u00a0check it back in every time he\u00a0got back.\u00a0That&#8217;s the standard on most\u00a0military bases in this country.\u00a0You&#8217;re not allowed to carry a\u00a0gun unless you have a specific\u00a0reason on that duty, on that\u00a0day.\u00a0And then it goes back in the\u00a0armory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is true that there are civilian versions of pilots\u2019 service weapons, but the proper analogy would be infantry or other ground units. this is what we&#8217;re facing right now.<\/p>\n<p>VELSHI: Kris, you\u2019ve worked hard to\u00a0clarify that message.\u00a0Again, generally, it actually works &#8212;\u00a0most Americans are in favor of\u00a0certain forms of regulation\u00a0around guns, whether it&#8217;s red\u00a0flag laws or background\u00a0checks.\u00a0And we&#8217;ve made incremental\u00a0progress, very incremental\u00a0progress on a federal level.\u00a0We&#8217;ve made better than\u00a0incremental progress on the\u00a0state level with respect to\u00a0guns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But how do we get folks to\u00a0understand this, that when\u00a0people say it&#8217;s about the\u00a0Second Amendment, and the right\u00a0to self-defense, people in war\u00a0don&#8217;t carry the weapons that\u00a0the average American has?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>KRIS BROWN (Retired Navy):\u00a0He was a fighter pilot and before I came on today, Ali, I\u00a0talked to him about what his\u00a0requirements were flying over Bosnia, for example.\u00a0He was issued a gun every time\u00a0he left the carrier, and had to\u00a0check it back in every time he\u00a0got back.\u00a0That&#8217;s the standard on most\u00a0military bases in this country.\u00a0You&#8217;re not allowed to carry a\u00a0gun unless you have a specific\u00a0reason on that duty, on that\u00a0day.\u00a0And then it goes back in the\u00a0armory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I think that part of our\u00a0history and heritage is\u00a0actually quite important.\u00a0We hear references to things\u00a0like the Wild West, Ali, and in\u00a0the end, in most of those\u00a0western towns, you have to\u00a0check your gun at the border.\u00a0It couldn&#8217;t be brought in.\u00a0And I think what you see in the\u00a0polls, which is rising across\u00a0the country, Americans saying,\u00a0enough, background checks, I\u00a0want those.\u00a0Extreme risk laws or red flag\u00a0laws, and assault weapons bans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s because of things like\u00a0this.\u00a0We don&#8217;t believe that a guns\u00a0everywhere philosophy, as\u00a0Americans, is consistent with\u00a0our heritage.\u00a0And certainly isn&#8217;t consistent\u00a0with our public safety.\u00a0So, we need to see the states\u00a0incubate much more of a focus\u00a0around public safety.\u00a0We need these permitting\u00a0systems to be put back in\u00a0place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MSNBC\u2019s Ali Velshi kicked off the new year by guest hosting All In Monday was a day of reflection and retrospection.
