This could amount to as much as <em>$28 trillion<\/em> (more than the nation\u2019s entire GDP) over the remainder of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>These figures are based on a new study by Eric Hanushek of Stanford University, an economist and expert in education. It is a continuation of his 2020 study as well as work published October by Harvard and Dartmouth professors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new study analyses <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/24\/ny-parents-rip-schools-after-math-scores-decline-during-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the hideous nationwide decline in 8th-grade math<\/a> scores on the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress, a k a the nation\u2019s report card. The <em>Average <\/em>drop in math scores amounted to eight points \u2014 the largest ever recorded, erasing all gains since 2000, equal to as much as 0.8 missed <em>Jahre<\/em> School<strong> <\/strong>There is a 5.6% lifetime penalty on earnings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s only for the average, eight-point decline.<strong> <\/strong>Drops of more than 5% were seen in the worst states. <em>10 points<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/24\/fresh-evidence-that-covid-school-closures-led-to-dramatic-setbacks-in-learning-for-americas-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">implying even bigger future penalties<\/a>.<strong> <\/strong>The size of a state\u2019s economy also plays a role in the eventual catastrophe, so \u2014 per Hanushek\u2019s models \u2014 California, which saw a six-point score drop, will nonetheless see the biggest absolute state-level economic loss (amounting to $1.3 trillion).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not only earnings that take a hit. A Harvard study found that lower NAEP math scores were associated with higher rates of incarceration, teenage pregnancy and the use food-stamp benefits, as well as lower odds of owning and marrying and full-time employment.\u00a0These scores are a good indicator of overall success and failure. <\/p>\n<p>Tragically, the learning losses could have been prevented. Schools were never the vectors of COVID transmission. Yet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/01\/how-teachers-unions-sold-out-our-kids-in-the-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the United Federation of Teachers<\/a>They conspired with the federal government and the blue-state politicians to close them down during the pandemic. This forced parents and students to accept less-effective remote education. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/29\/pompeo-yes-randi-weingarten-is-the-most-dangerous-person-in-america-heres-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UFT head Randi Weingarten\u2019s justification for the closures<\/a>? This is the cruel and heartless claim \u201ckids are resilient.\u201d Yet the new study suggests they\u2019ll pay a big price.\u00a0But don\u2019t expect Weingarten or any of her co-conspirators to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/24\/teacher-unions-claim-student-learning-loss-is-no-big-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seriously apologize<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/12\/02\/randi-weingartens-alternative-fact-defense-of-her-actions-during-the-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">let alone take responsibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, learning losses can be recovered \u2014 <em>If <\/em>Schools return to their pre-pandemic achievement levels in the medium term and exceed them. However, they are currently trying to get rid of the problem.<em> All<\/em> It seems absurd to abandon academic standards for woke indoctrination (done under the name of equity) as a means of remediation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s more ugly evidence that on education \u2014 as on every other social issue \u2014 kids come dead last for US progressives.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can add one more grim number to the list exacted by disastrous COVID-era school closuresRemote schooling can lead to a significant loss in the lifetime earnings of students.
