It has more than 500,000 users. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/27\/tiktok-reaches-1-billion-monthly-users.html\">1 billion users<\/a> Every month. Legislators and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/15\/fbi-is-extremely-concerned-about-chinas-influence-through-tiktok.html\">FBI Director Christopher Wray<\/a> Many have expressed concerns that TikTok\u2019s ownership structure could make U.S. users data vulnerable since it is owned by companies based out of China. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/05\/huawei-would-have-to-give-data-to-china-government-if-asked-experts.html\">are required by law to hand over user information if the government requests it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok repeatedly stated that U.S. user information are not stored in China. These assurances have not helped to alleviate concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc. TikTok was compared to &#8220;digital fentanyl&#8221; Sunday, telling NBC\u2019s &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; He believes the ban should be extended nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s highly addictive and destructive,&#8221; He said. &#8220;We&#8217;re seeing troubling data about the corrosive impact of constant social media use, particularly on young men and women here in America.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\">Facebook<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\"><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> Frances Haugen a whistleblower stated Sunday that, because similar algorithms are used by social media platforms like YouTube and Twitter, regulators should push for greater transparency as a first step.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">CNBC Pro offers more information on tech and cryptography<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Haugen stated that many people don&#8217;t realize the U.S. has fallen behind in regulation of social media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is like we&#8217;re back in 1965, we don&#8217;t have seatbelt laws yet,&#8221; She spoke with NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several of the most important tech bills were not passed by Congress in 2022.<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0Included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/03\/senate-committee-advances-open-app-markets-act.html\">antitrust legislation<\/a>\u00a0App stores would need to be created by this.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\">Apple<\/a>\u00a0And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\">Google<\/a>\u00a0Developers will be offered additional payment options and the ability to pursue legal action.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/28\/kids-online-safety-act-may-harm-minors-civil-society-groups-warn.html\">mandating new guardrails to protect kids online<\/a>. Congress made more progress this year towards a better tomorrow than it has in the past.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/bipartisan-ec-leaders-hail-committee-passage-of-the-american-data-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compromise bill on national privacy standards<\/a>However, there are only a few state laws that protect consumer data.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic senator from Minnesota, stated that there is bipartisan support to many of these bill and that many of them have made it to Senate floor.
