The United States said goodbye to the last World War II Medal of Honor recipient. He was one of the surviving Tuskegee Airmen, and one of its last Code Talkers. They are just a handful of the brave men and women who served the United States and died this past year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Here is a list of distinguished veterans who died in the past calendar year, as compiled by Military Times editors.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Hershel &#8220;Woody&#8221; Williams, a Marine survivor of Iwo Jima, is photographed during the Iwo Jima Battle Survivors and Family Association 70th Anniversary Reunion at Wichita Falls in Texas on February 14, 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/military-honor\/2022\/06\/29\/last-surviving-ww2-medal-of-honor-recipient-woody-williams-dies-at-98\/\">Marine veteran Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams<\/a> The last World War II Medal of Honor recipient was he.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Williams enlisted in Marine Corps in 1943. He landed on Iwo Jima two years later with the 21st Marine Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division. Williams, along with four other Marines engaged Japanese pillboxes in a four-hour fight using his flamethrower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Williams fought the remaining part of the Iwo Jima campaigns before he was seriously wounded on March 6, 1945. He was then removed from combat. In October 1945, President Harry S. Truman gave Williams the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Williams passed away in June at The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/11\/west-virginia-va-medical-center-renamed-to-honor-medal-of-honor-recipient\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huntington, West Virginia, Veterans Affairs hospital named in his honor<\/a>. He was 98 years of age.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Charles McGee<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Charles McGee, Tuskegee Airman and his great grandson Iain Lanphier react when President Donald Trump gives his State of the Union address at a joint session of Congress in Washington, Tuesday February 4, 2020. Gen. Charles Edward McGee<\/a> He was one of the few Tuskegee Airmen that survived, a group of predominantly Black pilots who fought in World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Tuskegee airmen flew bombers through Europe with the Tuskegee Airmen, piloting P-51 Mustang fighters sporting red-painted tails. It was this design that earned them the nickname of &#8220;The Tuskegee Airmen.&#8221; \u201cRed Tails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">McGee flew 409 combat missions over three wars \u2014 World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War \u2014 before he retired in 1973. Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/02\/06\/at-state-of-the-union-a-generals-star-for-a-tuskegee-airman-and-a-glimpse-at-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promoted McGee to brigadier general<\/a> February 4, 2020<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">McGee was 102 when he died at his Maryland home on January 16, 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">David E. Grange, Jr.<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Maj. Gen. Gen. David E. Grange, Jr<\/a>A legendary Army Ranger,. served in three wars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Grange was a paratrooper during World War II, serving with the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He played a part in many campaigns. Grange was assigned to 82nd Airborne Division at the end of the war and before he attended Officer Candidate school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Grange was sent to Korea with the 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment, and then served three tours in Vietnam \u2014 the first as an adviser, the second with the 506th Infantry Regiment, and the third with the 101st Airborne Division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s Best Ranger Competition was named for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2016\/09\/26\/legendary-ranger-is-this-year-s-honorary-sergeant-major-of-the-army\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grange<\/a> He retired in 1984 after 41 years of service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Grange was 97 at the time of his passing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Jim \u201cPee Wee\u201d Martin<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Army veteran Jim &#8220;Pee Wee&#8221; Martin reacts after a tandem jump by parachute on June 5, 2014 in Carentan. He was a member of the 506th Parachute Infantry Division. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimpeeweemartin.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nicknamed \u201cPee Wee\u201d because of how small he was<\/a> Comparatively to other soldiers<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Martin and the 506th fought in the Battle of the Bulge against the German counteroffensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The 101st sent 500 troops to Martin\u2019s funeral. He was 101 years of age when he passed away on September 11, 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Lawrence Brooks<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Lawrence Brooks, a World War II veteran, holds a photo taken in 1943 of him as he celebrates his 110th Birthday at the National World War II Museum, New Orleans, Sept. 12, 2019. He was discharged in 1941 after completing his mandatory one-year service. However, Brooks was released in 1941 after the attack at Pearl Harbor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2021\/11\/11\/the-oldest-living-wwii-veteran-now-112-wants-to-be-remembered-as-a-good-soldier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooks returned to the Army<\/a>Eventually, he served in Australia, Papua, and the Philippines with The 91st Engineer Battalion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Brooks was 112 years old when he died in New Orleans. Brooks was buried in New Orleans, Louisiana. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/01\/16\/oldest-wwii-veteran-remembered-in-museum-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the National WWII Museum<\/a>. To provide honor guard, members of the 91st Brigade Engineer Battalion traveled from Fort Hood (Texas)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Dean Caswell<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Retired Marine Corps Col. At 20 years of age, he joined the Corps in September 1942.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">According to the American Fighter Aces Association, Caswell flew in World War II with Marine Fighting Squadron 221 and then served two tours during World War II. Caswell has been acknowledged with <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/hero\/35668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting down seven enemy aircraft<\/a> Combat in the air<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Caswell was 100-years-old when he passed away at Austin, Texas, on September 21.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Samuel Sandoval<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Samuel Sandoval (Navajo Code Talker) talks about his experiences as a military code talker in Cortez, Colo. This group of communication specialists used their native language to create an unbreakable code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Code Talkers sent thousands of messages to Japan about the troop movements and tactics, and participated in every Marines attack in the Pacific. Their roles were highly classified \u2014 the Code Talkers could not discuss the mission until it was declassified in 1968.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Sandoval was an honorably discharged soldier who served five combat tours. Later, he became a cartoonist in the Marine magazine Leatherneck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Booth served his country and was later an artist director. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/news\/celebrity-deaths\/george-booth-1926-2022-cartoonist-for-the-new-yorker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New Yorker, where he drew cartoons for 50 years<\/a>According to his obituary, he was 82 years old. In 2010, he was awarded a National Cartoonists Society lifetime achievement award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Booth was 96 years of age when he passed away in New York City on November 1, 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">Hiroshi Miyamura<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Hiroshi Myamura, Medal of Honor recipient, is present at the groundbreaking ceremony for National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, on March 25, 2022. Miyamura served in the Army Reserves after the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Miyamura was drafted into action during World War II. His company was attacked on April 24, 1951. He ordered his squad to withdraw while he remained behind to continue fighting, buying him time to evacuate his men. He was captured and held in prison as a war prisoner for four months and two years. Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded the Medal of Honor to Miyamura after he was freed. He had secretly received it while he was still being held prisoner of war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Miyamura was just 97 years of age when he passed away in Phoenix, Arizona on November 29, 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 iKlOni a-heading2\">John L. Canley<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption class=\"image__Caption-sc-23pfqr-0 bJsBbG a-caption\">\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 eGGFoB image-metadata\"><span>Retired Marine Corps Sgt. Canley<\/a> In 1968, he saved the lives Marines who were under his command in Hue City (Vietnam).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Canley and his Marines fought off multiple attacks while they patrolled the streets of Hue. More than 20 Marines were rescued by Canley who then carried them to safety. Canley, his commanding Officer, was wounded and he took command to lead the Marines through battle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">He received the Navy Cross originally, but President Donald Trump awarded it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/25\/50-years-later-marine-gunny-to-be-awarded-the-medal-of-honor-for-hue-city-heroics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presented Canley with the Medal of Honor in 2018<\/a> His medal was upgraded after a public push. He was the first Black Marine to receive the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">After a decade-long battle against cancer, Canley passed away on May 11, 2022. Joel Gomez and Noemi Santiago watch as the casket of former Army Sgt. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Ex-Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/12\/01\/soldier-dies-nearly-20-years-after-being-wounded-in-iraq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sgt. Joel Gomez<\/a> He had lived with quadriplegia for almost 20 years after he was severely injured in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Gomez was on an attack mission to capture enemy soldiers when the armored vehicle in which he was riding crashed into the Tigris River. His spine was damaged in two places. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Gomez had been sent to a nursing home by his caregiver in October because he had to return to Mexico for an immigration issue. He developed pneumonia there, which led to his death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Gomez, who was 42 years old, died in Illinois on November 22, 2022.
