He demanded that Congress ban this app in all 50 states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think the comparison is apt for at least two reasons,\u201d Gallagher. \u201cOne, it\u2019s highly addictive and destructive and we\u2019re seeing troubling data about the corrosive impact of constant social media use, particularly on young men and women here in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s also digital fentanyl in the sense that, as you allude to, it ultimately goes back to the Chinese Communist Party. TikTok is owned by ByteDance; ByteDance is effectively controlled by the CCP. So, we have to ask whether we want the CCP to control what is on the cusp of becoming the most powerful media company in America,\u201d Gallagher went on. \u201cThat is very troubling. And so, I was glad to see my colleagues in the Senate pass, in unanimous fashion, a ban of TikTok on government devices. I think we should do the same in the House and expand that ban nationally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Gallagher then listed several safety concerns he had about TikTok \u2014 namely that the Chinese government could easily use the technology to access and save sensitive data about American citizens. He was also concerned that the Chinese could filter the information being sent to Americans through the app, especially if other news sources are limited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019m concerned about TikTok\u2019s ability to track your location, track your keystrokes, track what websites you\u2019re visiting, even when you\u2019re not using the app. I\u2019m concerned about the lack of transparency around the algorithm which is addicting kids,\u201d He explained. \u201cBut I think what\u2019s more pernicious is the fact that, since a lot of young men and women in America increasingly turn to TikTok to get news, what if they start censoring the news, right? What if they start tweaking the algorithm to determine what the CCP deems fit to print? That\u2019s incredibly dangerous. That\u2019s as if, in 1958, we allowed the KGB and Pravda to buy The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and The Washington Post. That actually probably understates the threat. I think it\u2019s a multi-pronged threat we need to look at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/localtoday.news\/wi\/wisconsin-congressman-warns-about-tiktok-demands-ban-48364.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gallagher<\/a> This phrase was borrowed \u201cdigital fentanyl\u201d From an ex-FCC Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/tik-tok-ban-fcc-commissioner-brendan-carr-digital-fentanyl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brendan Carr<\/a>In November, he used the phrase to describe the app during an interview with Fox News. Gallagher repeatedly called for Americans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gop-congressman-calls-on-americans-to-delete-tiktok-explains-dangers-of-using-the-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delete the app<\/a> It is because of security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/20\/technology\/tiktok-ban-government-issued-devices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14 states<\/a> Apps on state-owned state devices that are used by state workers and contractors have been banned. Congress approved a bill that would ban the use of the app on federal devices. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/tiktok-ban-on-government-devices-included-in-1-7-trillion-spending-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1.7 trillion omnibus<\/a> Spending bill passed last month. Already the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/tiktok-banned-from-devices-issued-by-u-s-house-of-representatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House<\/a> It has banned the use of its app on any devices.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher previously introduced legislation together with Raja Krishnamoorthi, Democratic Illinois Congressman. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lawmakers-introduce-bill-to-block-tiktok-in-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban the app<\/a> altogether. \u201cIt would allow for a sale to an American company,\u201d Gallagher shared his thoughts with Todd. \u201cThat option was explored during the Trump administration. Oracle explored a version of that. Microsoft ultimately fell through. I think there\u2019s a workable solution there\u2026 I\u2019m open to having that discussion with TikTok. And I really want to have that discussion with the Biden administration. I don\u2019t think this should be a partisan issue.
