This was even though severe winter weather conditions had passed through the United States and other carriers had stopped cancelling a large number of flights.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s executives promised that they would reimburse passengers whose flights were cancelled, as well those who had to stay in hotels or rent cars, and anyone who was forced to purchase tickets with another airline. Buttigieg called it the \u201clevel of disruption\u201d Customers have reported experiencing the same over the last week \u201cunacceptable\u201d In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/sites\/dot.gov\/files\/2022-12\/Message%20from%20Secretary%20Buttigieg%20to%20Southwest%20Airlines%20CEO%20Bob%20Jordan_12.29.22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> Bob Jordan, Southwest CEO, said that his agency would use \u201cthe fullest extent of its investigative and enforcement powers\u201d To ensure that customers get reimbursed.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSanders\/status\/1608264722385899520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> Transportation Department to Hold Southwest CEO Bob Jordan \u201caccountable for his greed and incompetence; Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1608482946977087488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remarked<\/a> that he joined Sanders \u201cnearly six months ago\u201d In asking Buttigieg, to impose penalties and fines upon airlines who cancel their flights. \u201cWhy were these recommendations not followed?\u201d The lawmaker inquired. \u201cThis mess with Southwest could have been avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Southwest canceled 57% percent of its flights on Thursday while other companies such as American Airlines or United Airlines canceled less that 1%, according the Reuters. <a href=\"https:\/\/flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/yesterday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> FlightAware. On Friday and Saturday, the cancellation rates of major carriers were roughly equal.<\/p>\n<p>The June\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flight-Delays-Letter-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> Sanders, who noted that the industry received $54 Billion in relief during the lockdown, prompted the question to Buttigieg \u201cpromptly refund passengers for flights that have been delayed over an hour,\u201d As well as imposing fines on airlines \u201cflights that are delayed more than two hours\u201d For more information, please visit: \u201cscheduling flights that they are unable to properly staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaxpayers bailed out the airline industry during their time of need,\u201d Sanders wrote. \u201cIt is the responsibility of the airline industry and the Department of Transportation to ensure, to the maximum extent possible, that the flying public and crew members are able to get to their destinations on time and without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina Turner was a former Ohio state legislator and an ally for Sanders. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ninaturner\/status\/1608182489914413056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accountable<\/a> For the Southwest meltdown. \u201cThis is incompetence. However, his time in the Biden administration has been fraught with multiple scandals.
