The same model had been used to surveil Osama Bin Laden\u2019s Pakistani compound, and the technology that powered it had been a highly-guarded intelligence secret until a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when an U.S. drone on a surveillance mission malfunctioned, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/08\/world\/middleeast\/drone-crash-in-iran-reveals-secret-us-surveillance-bid.html\">crash landing in the Iranian desert<\/a>. The nuclear agreement was a glint of light in President Barack Obama&#8217;s eye. He had to choose between allowing our most sensitive national security technology to be given to an enemy or fighting back.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Times, Obama &#8220;briefly considered sending in a Navy SEAL team to blow it up before it fell into the hands of Iranian engineers,&#8221; But &#8220;decided not to take the risk.&#8221; He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052970204770404577082822643123332\">also opted against<\/a> options B and C: Deploying some of our Iranian allies to track down the drone or launching an airstrike to destroy its remains: U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal they didn\u2019t think the drone\u2019s prized technology &#8220;could be reverse engineered with ease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he chose option D, do nothing, and you\u2019ll never guess what happened next! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/08\/world\/middleeast\/drone-crash-in-iran-reveals-secret-us-surveillance-bid.html\">Within days<\/a>, &#8220;the Iranians paraded the drone through the streets of Tehran, a propaganda victory.&#8221; Surely just another American humiliation courtesy of Obama\u2019s appeasement of America\u2019s enemies. The world moved on.<\/p>\n<p>But, fast forward a decade later and you will see the real consequences. The technology that powered the drone is no longer a success in the messaging wars but a formidable weapon on the battlefield. Iran had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/iran-says-it-has-built-attack-drone-based-on-captured-u-s-craft-1475333429\">replicated it<\/a> 2016 We close 2022 with a complete circle. The Iranians are now a major player in the development of drone technology and its deployment to battlefields around the globe. They also supply Russia in its war against the civilian population in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Obama has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/18\/politics\/barack-obama-iran-self-reflection-analysis\/index.html\">said he regrets<\/a> His stoic inaction to support Iranian protesters during 2009.
