Dave LaRock, state senators. Amanda Chase and Frank M. Ruff seek to repeal a Virginia law making it illegal for people to carry loaded semi-automatic center fire rifles, pistols, or shotguns on streets, roads or alleyways. \u201cany other place of whatever nature that is open to the public\u201d Certain parts of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The law in force applies to Alexandria, Fairfax Falls Church and Newport News, Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia Beach, and the counties Arlington, Fairfax Loudoun, Henrico, Loudoun, and Prince William. The law does not apply to law enforcement officers or licensed security guards. It also does not apply to people with a valid concealed gun permit, lawful hunting or recreational shooting at established distances.<\/p>\n<p>LaRock can also pre-file <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?231+sum+HB1427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Bill 1427<\/a> earlier this month, which would remove a locality\u2019s authority to prohibit the possession or carrying firearms in public parks and community centers owned by the locality, as well as public streets, alleys and sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>The bills come a few months after the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, which ruled New York\u2019s concealed carry law was unconstitutional. LaRock stated that he wanted to see the proposed repeals passed. \u201cwould be especially appropriate considering the Bruen decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth of these current Virginia laws have the effect of making people less safe by depriving them of the right and ability to defend themselves without unnecessary government interference,\u201d LaRock stated.<\/p>\n<p>Gun control advocates are divided.
