Now, the evidence is more compelling, and frightening, especially if you make a living in La La Land.<\/p>\n<p>People stopped going to the movies this year in alarming numbers, and it got worse as the holidays approached.<\/p>\n<p>The raw numbers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2022\/12\/avatar-the-way-of-water-cant-save-box-office-1234793396\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tell the story.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The gross for 2022 domestic now looks like $7.5 billion, perhaps 15 percent lower than the year\u2019s lowball $8.5 billion projection and far off the $11.2 billion of 2019 (which, at today\u2019s ticket prices, would be over $13 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in 2022, we saw modest-sized hits like \u201cThe Lost City,\u201d \u201cElvis\u201d  \u201cThe Woman King\u201d Even if there were other films that stumbled upon it, a show of non-franchise material could attract a crowd.\u201cBros,\u201d \u201cDevotion,\u201d \u201cFather Stu\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Now?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/oscar-bait-movies-bomb-box-office\/\"> little else.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Studios often release their nominees for awards season in the final weeks of the year. Although they don&#8217;t have the flash of a superhero romp, they still manage to sell some tickets.<\/p>\n<p>  \u201cThe King\u2019s Speech\u201d (2010) \u2013 $138 million \u201cGreen Book\u201d (2018) \u2013 $85 million \u201cA Star Is Born\u201d (2018) \u2013 $215 million \u201cHouse of Gucci\u201d (2021) \u2013 $53 million  <\/p>\n<p>What has changed?<\/p>\n<p>The critic reached out via Twitter to get some informal responses to a simple question: &#8220;Why did you stop going to movies?&#8221;\u00a0The responses suggest that there are many causes, which go beyond fears of a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Streaming<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime have all seen a rise in streaming content.
