O\u2019Rourke, &#8220;enfeeble the individual and exhaust the economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>California Democrats love to say their state\u2019s laws lead the way. But where, exactly, are they leading us? Here are some guideposts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The California Climate Crisis Act<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In August, the state legislature approved a plan to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB1279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce carbon emissions<\/a>\u00a0by at least 85 percent by 2045. Critics predict the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2012\/07\/lets-cool-it-with-the-big-ideas\/309034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan<\/a>\u00a0will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billAnalysisClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB1279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost about $4 trillion<\/a>, add $50,000 to the cost of every new home, endanger &#8220;hundreds of thousands of jobs,&#8221; and could intensify the number of companies leaving the state. It\u2019s unclear if the rules will apply to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-pol-ca-richest-nancy-pelosi-vineyard-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democratic politicians\u2019<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldoffinewine.com\/news-features\/carbon-footprint-counting-the-cost-of-wine-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wineries<\/a>, which climate activists say hurt the climate by sucking up water, using pesticides, and employing gas-powered tractors. California also banned the sale of gas-powered cars\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/09\/23\/governor-newsom-announces-california-will-phase-out-gasoline-powered-cars-drastically-reduce-demand-for-fossil-fuel-in-californias-fight-against-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starting in 2035.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>The Safer Streets For All Act<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>California\u2019s pimps can now operate in the open after legislators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decriminalized streetside sex solicitation<\/a>\u00a0in the name of equity. Supporters of the bill, authored by state Sen. Scott Wiener (D.), sought this repeal of California&#8217;s longtime anti-loitering law, claiming police used it to target minorities and transgender people. Victims of sex trafficking opposed the new legislation, since the anti-loitering policy helped cops find exploited kids.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Senate Bills 923 and 107: Transgender Health Care<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Senate Bill 923 will mandate employees of private health insurance companies to undergo\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB923&amp;search_keywords=transgender+insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;cultural competency&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0training to ensure they\u2019re fluent in transgender speak, so that they can best assist customers who want to schedule genital surgeries, breast removals, or voice-changing therapies.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those patients may be young kids, who could soon undergo gender reassignment surgery without parental consent. In August, the legislature passed Senate Bill 107, which empowers California courts to take temporary jurisdiction of kids who come to California from out of state in search of hormone therapy or other transition treatment.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>SB 1327: Gun Bounties<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Gov. Gavin Newsom (D.) was a driving force behind\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB1327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this law<\/a>, which incentivizes Californians to sue state residents who buy, sell, lend, or transfer assault weapons. The state would cover the legal fees for any Californian who launches a successful suit and pay them at least $10,000 in additional compensation. The state\u2019s ACLU chapter slammed the bill as &#8220;a radical and dangerous assault on our constitutional structure.&#8221; A federal judge in Southern California blocked parts of the law late this month, teeing up a potential Supreme Court case for 2023.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Abortion Bills Galore<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>California lawmakers went all-in on abortion this year, establishing a $20 million taxpayer-funded Abortion Practical Support fund to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cover the expenses<\/a>\u00a0of out-of-state women who head west to undergo the procedure. A bill from Sen. Lena Gonzalez (D.)\u00a0 barred private insurance plans from charging\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">copays or deductibles<\/a>\u00a0for abortions. And a bill from state Sen. Anna Caballero (D.) required the state to establish an official &#8220;California abortion finder&#8221; website, which dismisses crisis pregnancy centers as &#8220;fake&#8221; clinics that disseminate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abortion.ca.gov\/find-a-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misinformation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Assembly Bill 2098: Policing Doctors&#8217; Speech<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Newsom in September signed Assemblyman Evan Low\u2019s (D.) bill into law, giving the California Medical Board\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB2098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the power to punish and disbar\u00a0<\/a>doctors who disseminate what the state deems &#8220;misinformation.&#8221; The bill is specifically designed to stop doctors from spreading &#8220;misinformation&#8221; pertaining to COVID, like the idea that paper masks don\u2019t stop transmission or that school closures do more harm than good.
