It informed them that they had received a new diagnosis. \u201caggressive lung cancer with metastases,\u201d In addition to sending them a link on a DS1500 form, terminally ill persons can also fill out a form to receive certain benefits. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-south-yorkshire-64116668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease accept our sincere apologies for the previous text message. This has been sent in error. Our message to you should have read We wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year,\u201d The medical practice also sent a follow up message. Both messages are believed to have been received by the practice\u2019s nearly 8,000 patients.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Reed, a patient who received the text, was also waiting for lung cancer test results. He claimed that the first message made his partner cry. He said he tried calling the doctor\u2019s office, but could not get through the clogged phone lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey went from, \u2018You\u2019ve got lung cancer\u2019 to \u2018Merry Christmas\u2019 in about an hour. Unbelievable,\u201d Reed told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/12\/29\/gp-patients-aggressive-lung-cancer-diagnosis-text-mistake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Hargreaves claimed that she had a breakdown after receiving the first text. Hargreaves was waiting for information about tests to be run on a mole on her back.<\/p>\n<p>Hargreaves \u201cfelt sick to my teeth and broke down\u201d When she received the incorrect diagnosis text, she spoke out to the BBC \u201cI had just had a mole removed and was awaiting a result from a biopsy and I had been to hospital as my smear test came back abnormal, so yes, I was very worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carl Chegwin spoke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/12\/29\/1146070117\/a-u-k-medical-office-mistakenly-sent-patients-a-text-message-with-a-cancer-diagn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a> He and his mother were the two patients who received the texts. He explained that he was beginning to wonder if the texts were being sent to other people after realizing how many people had received them. \u201csome sort of sick joke.\u201d He stated that he would not be returning to Askern Medical Practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt completely took me by surprise,\u201d Chegwin stated this to BBC. \u201cThey\u2019ve just told people a few days before Christmas they\u2019ve got terminal lung cancer. They can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if the message was meant for someone, and then they are told it\u2019s a Christmas message, then again told, \u2018oh no, that was actually meant for you,\u2019\u201d He added. \u201cIf it\u2019s one of their admins that\u2019s sent out a mass text, I wouldn\u2019t be trusting them to empty the bins.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A medical practice in the United Kingdom accidentally told potentially thousands of its patients they had \u201caggressive lung cancer\u201d two days before Christmas.
