He is very sick,\u201d Francis spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask the Lord to console and sustain him in this witness of love for the Church to the very end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Vatican confirmed the statement. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/28\/europe\/pope-benedict-sick-pope-francis-intl\/index.html\">CNN <\/a>That \u201cin the last few hours there has been a deterioration due to the advancement of (Benedict\u2019s) age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation at the moment remains under control and continually monitored by his doctors,\u201d Matteo Bruni was the spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>Benedict is the only pope to resign, since popes typically serve until their death.
