However, they held a narrow advantage over Democrats by just 22 to 13. Now they have to pick a speaker, but that\u2019s proven to be far harder than anyone could have predicted.<\/p>\n<p>While Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), currently the top Republican in the House, should be a shoo-in for the job, at least five GOP lawmakers have publicly declared they won\u2019t vote for him as speaker, who needs 218 votes to wield the gavel.<\/p>\n<p>A new name has emerged in the race for consensus: Rep. Jim Jordan (R.OH).<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, is one of five lawmakers who oppose McCarthy and is asking Jordan for leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I want for Christmas is @Jim_Jordan to realize he should be Speaker of the House!,\u201d Gaetz tweeted Christmas Eve<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All I want for Christmas, is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jim_Jordan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Jim_Jordan<\/a> Realize that he should be the Speaker of the House!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Gaetz (@mattgaetz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattgaetz\/status\/1606647007145238529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Christmas Day, he doubled his efforts with another.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattgaetz\/status\/1607205825877086210\">tweet<\/a>: \u201c\u200bMerry Christmas to all! Make sure to join me in encouraging\u200b \u200b@Jim_Jordan\u200b \u200bto seek the Speakership :)\u200b.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz has voiced opposition to the California congressman in writing in a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/12\/21\/opinion-republicans-need-a-real-leader-not-kevin-mccarthy-rep-matt-gaetz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Caller<\/a> McCarthy&#8217;s piece of last week \u201cdoes not actually believe anything. He has no ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe McCarthy camp is spinning that Kevin must be accepted because \u2018we have to avoid chaos.\u2019 Chaos for who exactly? The special interests that are counting on McCarthy as their lapdog?\u201d Gaetz wrote. \u201cI\u2019m worried about chaos in the lives of my constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are currently two factions in the world: The Never Kevin side and The Only Kevin side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDozens of GOP lawmakers, from moderates to MAGA loyalists, have said they will only vote for McCarthy for Speaker, no matter how many rounds of votes it takes. If followed, that commitment to respond to hardball with hardball would basically ensure no other Republican comes close to the gavel,\u201d The Daily Beast <a href=\"https:\/\/12ft.io\/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedailybeast.com%2Frepublicans-play-chicken-with-kevin-mccarthys-speakership%3Fsource%3Darticles%26via%3Drss\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that are supportive of Kevin, which are far more numerous than his critics, are dug in at least as deep as his critics are,\u201d Rep. Tom Cole (R.OK), who is a supporter for McCarthy, told The Beast.\u00a0\u201cThe pressure won\u2019t be on them. It\u2019s gonna\u2019 be on the people that brought down the whole edifice\u2014 for what? For what purpose? What end?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) \u2014 who ran unsuccessfully against McCarthy for the speaker nomination last month \u2014 says there are upwards of 20 members in the Never Kevin movement. Good scoffed at Cole\u2019s declaration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s funny. The bottom line is, Kevin is not going to be speaker \u2026 He\u2019s not going to have the votes, and the number of individuals who are committed to not voting for him \u2014 it\u2019s growing, not receding,\u201d He stated.<\/p>\n<p>Good words from Republicans: \u201cget past the denial stage\u201d They say that the sooner they begin searching for a consensus candidate, \u201cthe better off we\u2019re all going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POLITICO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2022\/12\/21\/zelenskyy-in-washington-scalise-in-waiting-00074931\">reported<\/a> A group of lawmakers quietly approached Rep. Steve Scalise, R-LA, last week.
