That was a six-point increase from February and a year-to-date high, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destinationanalysts.com\/blog-the-state-of-the-american-traveler-in-november-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a>, published in November.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 62% of 2023 flight searches in the first week of December were for international destinations, up from 55% the same time last year, according to a recent Hopper <a href=\"https:\/\/media.hopper.com\/research\/2023-travel-outlook-report-top-3-travel-trends-to-watch-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>. It cited international travel among the top three trends for 2023, saying it&#8217;s poised &#8220;for a big comeback.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Searches on Kayak for flights abroad are up 1.3% versus a year ago, according to company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kayak.com\/flight-trends?origin=us&#038;collection=domestic-international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> as of Dec. 18. The trend has continued for trips booked for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>American travelers largely stayed within U.S. borders in 2020 and 2021 amid health concerns and overseas Covid-related restrictions such as testing requirements, mandatory quarantines or outright bans on foreign tourists. Visits to U.S. national parks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/22\/national-parks-are-booming-that-may-ruin-your-next-trip.html\">boomed<\/a> and RV rentals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/11\/how-to-rent-an-rv-for-a-safer-summer-vacation-amid-pandemic.html\">soared<\/a> as outdoor vacations offered the dual benefits of travel and relative virus safety.<\/p>\n<p>Now, fear of the virus has waned. In September, the share of travelers unconcerned about contracting Covid surpassed those who are concerned, the first time that had happened in the pandemic era, according to Destination Analysts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">&#8216;There&#8217;s a lot of pent-up travel demand&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107169959\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCaption\">Tower Bridge, London.<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCredit\">Karl Hendon | Moment | Getty Images<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>2022 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/11\/28\/travel-in-2022-is-it-time-to-plan-those-big-trips-abroad.html\">also a year for more big trips abroad<\/a> \u2014 but a spike in virus cases toward the end of 2021 and into the new year, fueled by the highly contagious omicron variant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/02\/omicron-clouds-outlook-for-international-travel-that-was-just-turning-a-corner.html\">somewhat dampened enthusiasm<\/a>, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of pent-up travel demand,&#8221; said Jessica Griscavage, a travel advisor and CEO of Runway Travel. &#8220;We missed travel for two to three years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2022\/07\/13\/revenge-travel-the-trend-behind-packed-airports-and-surging-airfare.html\">revenge travel<\/a>&#8221; trend \u2014 a term recently coined to describe burgeoning, pent-up wanderlust \u2014 coincides with looser health rules abroad and at home.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/10\/biden-administration-to-drop-covid-testing-requirements-for-international-air-travel.html\">dropped a Covid testing requirement<\/a> for inbound air travelers from abroad in June. Now, most are again welcoming visitors \u2014 especially those with a Covid vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Fully vaccinated tourists can access 197 countries without Covid-19 testing or quarantine, and an additional 16 are open but require testing, according to Kayak <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kayak.com\/travel-restrictions?travel=open-border\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pretty much at a place where we can go anywhere,&#8221; Florio said.<\/p>\n<p>Just 12 countries, including China, Libya, Turkmenistan and Yemen, are still closed to vaccinated Americans, according to Kayak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107168106\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107168106\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000278012\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107168107-16714178211671417817-27234928319-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1671420098&#038;w=750&#038;h=422&#038;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Those traveling to Japan right now are &#039;mostly rich people,&#039; says Japan Association of Travel Agents\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Many countries have more restrictions in place for the unvaccinated. About 69% of Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations_vacc-people-booster-percent-pop5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully vaccinated<\/a>, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/travelers\/international-travel-during-covid19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommends<\/a> being up to date on vaccines before international travel.<\/p>\n<p>Many nations \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/20\/australia-to-welcome-international-tourists-starting-monday.html\">Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-12\/covid-travel-rules-are-ending-118-countries-open-for-unvaccinated-travelers?sref=ctSjKj2N&#038;leadSource=uverify%20wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bhutan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afar.com\/magazine\/israel-drops-covid-testing-requirement-for-travelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/travel\/tips\/japan-travel-restrictions-reopening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/malaysia-reopens-borders-vaccinated-passengers-after-two-years-travel-curbs-2022-04-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malaysia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmorocco.com\/en\/travel-info\/covid-19-travel-safely-to-morocco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morocco<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/29\/new-zealands-borders-are-fully-reopening-after-more-than-two-years.html\">New Zealand<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/10\/world\/asia\/philippines-reopens-tourists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Philippines<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/24\/singapore-to-ease-covid-measures-drops-outdoor-mask-mandate-.html\">Singapore<\/a> \u2014 eased border closures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/10\/australia-new-zealand-bali-malaysia-philippines-reopen-for-travel.html\">in 2022<\/a>. Many European nations also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/travel\/can-americans-travel-to-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped<\/a> testing requirements for Americans. (Travelers should consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/traveladvisories\/COVID-19-Country-Specific-Information.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. State Department website<\/a> for country-specific Covid restrictions.)<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/01\/why-labor-economists-say-the-remote-work-revolution-is-here-to-stay.html\">pandemic-era surge in remote work<\/a> has made &#8220;bucket-list trips more of an achievable reality,&#8221; said Nitya Chambers, executive editor and senior vice president of content at Lonely Planet.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Hopper found 67% of travelers take trips more often and 20% travel farther away due to the flexibility of remote work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Where travel is ramping up most<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107169953\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCaption\">Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCredit\">Marty Windle | Moment | Getty Images<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The Asia-Pacific region is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/17\/when-will-asias-travel-industry-recover-maybe-as-soon-as-2023.html\">poised<\/a> for the biggest bounce in 2023 due to its broad reopening in the second half of 2022, travel experts said.<\/p>\n<p>Japan has seen perhaps the biggest boost in interest, they said. The country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/travel\/2022\/11\/11\/japan-travel-open-restrictions-tourism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">re-opened<\/a> its borders to travelers Oct. 11, with some remaining restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You almost can&#8217;t talk about travel without the country of Japan being referenced for 2023,&#8221; Florio said, adding that Australia and New Zealand are also &#8220;massive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asia has surged in demand the most of all regions, <a href=\"https:\/\/media.hopper.com\/research\/2023-travel-outlook-report-top-3-travel-trends-to-watch-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to Hopper data, which shows 27% of international flight searches are to Asian cities versus 19% last year.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, eight of the top 10 trending international flight destinations in early December were within Asia and Oceania, Hopper said. Tokyo; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Bangkok were the top three, with airfare averaging around $1,200 per round trip ticket.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107169958\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCaption\">Bangkok, Thailand.<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCredit\">Pakin Songmor | Moment | Getty Images<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>G Adventures, an international tour operator, has seen 2023 sales swell most for Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, said managing director Ben Perlo. This November was a record overall month for the company; sales for the three Asian nations each surpassed their November 2019 numbers, he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Europe has remained the most popular destination in terms of total volume, with European cities capturing a third of all international flight searches, about the same as 2021, Hopper said.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term rentals (those 28 days or longer) have &#8220;become substantially more popular in Asia-Pacific compared to a year ago,&#8221; according to an AirBnb spokesperson. Most long-term stays are in Europe and North America, though.<\/p>\n<p>Major European hubs were among the top searched this year through Sept. 30, according to Google Flights data. London ranked No. 1, followed by Paris (No. 3), Rome (No. 6) and Lisbon (No. 9). (Canada, Mexico and Japan ranked second, fourth and sixth, respectively.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everybody wants to go to Europe,&#8221; said Griscavage. &#8220;It was a destination everyone missed through the pandemic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Due to the demand, people have gotten more &#8220;creative&#8221; on how to travel to Europe, she added. Many are opting for the typically less busy (and less costly) shoulder season, perhaps as early as March or in the late fall, Griscavage said.<\/p>\n<p>Global demand for travel has played out similarly, with most interest directed at Europe and Asia, according to Expedia <a href=\"https:\/\/mesocp.azureedge.net\/media\/1ohbds43\/expedia_travel-trends-report_rgb_us-1.pdf?mcicid=cp.cplite.2023traveltrends-expedia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>. Edinburgh, Scotland, and Sydney, Australia, rank No. 1 and 6 partly due to respective major events like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/experience\/what-is-the-festival-fringe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fringe<\/a>, the world&#8217;s largest arts and media festival, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interpride.org\/worldpride\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WorldPride<\/a>, Expedia said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Economic concerns, inflation &#8216;aren&#8217;t stopping people&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107169965\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCaption\">Edinburgh, Scotland.<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCredit\">Joe Daniel Price | Moment | Getty Images<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>This isn&#8217;t all to say travel is without headwinds, though. Value has been of particular concern for travelers, whose budgets have been stressed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/08\/how-to-save-20percent-on-airfare-if-you-dont-mind-taking-some-risks.html\">high inflation<\/a>. Overall prices for airline fares and hotels are up 36% and 3%, respectively, in the past year, according to the consumer price index.<\/p>\n<p>International trips are poised to be more expensive next year, Hopper said, despite signals from the consumer price index that airfare, hotel and rental car prices have been trending downward in recent months. That dynamic is likely driving at least part of the popularity, Perlo said.
