Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will face two factions a little more than a week from now, when Republicans pick out a new speaker of the House. He\u2019ll need 218 votes to wield the gavel, but there will be only 222 Republicans in the chamber, meaning he can lose just five.<\/p>\n<p>And wouldn\u2019t you know it? Five GOP lawmakers have already announced that they won\u2019t vote for McCarthy. Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) says there are upwards of 20 members in the Never Kevin movement.<\/p>\n<p>Should the five follow through and actually vote against McCarthy, the whole process will be thrown into turmoil. Another group of Republicans is quietly working behind the scenes to find a replacement everyone can support.<\/p>\n<p>The Only Kevin group is much larger, the Daily Beast <a href=\"https:\/\/12ft.io\/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedailybeast.com%2Frepublicans-play-chicken-with-kevin-mccarthys-speakership%3Fsource%3Darticles%26via%3Drss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDozens of GOP lawmakers, from moderates to MAGA loyalists, have said they will only vote for McCarthy for Speaker, no matter how many rounds of votes it takes. If followed, that commitment to respond to hardball with hardball would basically ensure no other Republican comes close to the gavel,\u201d The Beast reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that are supportive of Kevin, which are far more numerous than his critics, are dug in at least as deep as his critics are,\u201d Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), a supporter of McCarthy, told The Beast. \u201cThe pressure won\u2019t be on them. It\u2019s gonna\u2019 be on the people that brought down the whole edifice \u2014 for what? For what purpose? What end?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good, however, scoffed at Cole\u2019s declaration. \u201cThat\u2019s funny,\u201d Good said. \u201cThe bottom line is, Kevin is not going to be speaker\u2026 He\u2019s not going to have the votes, and the number of individuals who are committed to not voting for him \u2014 it\u2019s growing, not receding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, Good said, need to \u201cget past the denial stage\u201d saying the sooner they start searching for a consensus candidate, \u201cthe better off we\u2019re all going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2022\/12\/21\/zelenskyy-in-washington-scalise-in-waiting-00074931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> last week that a group of lawmakers has quietly approached Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), who is currently the No. 2 leader in the House GOP, about running for speaker if McCarthy comes up short.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteve, just be ready,\u201d one member currently backing McCarthy told the liberal political website. Late last month, after it was clear Republicans had taken control of the House, Scalise ran unopposed for majority leader and won easily. The member said he \u201ccould be a good consensus leader if things don\u2019t go well for Kevin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The situation is dicey. Scalise isn\u2019t openly running for the position because it\u2019s dangerous to announce a challenge to the powerful McCarthy: if someone tries and fails, that member could well by punished for their temerity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf somebody were to come out now and we didn\u2019t deliver enough votes to stop Mr. McCarthy, that there would be a real potential for blowback,\u201d Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/3769293-behind-the-scenes-hunt-builds-for-mccarthy-speaker-alternative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Hill. \u201cThey want to be very careful. So I think I think people are interested.
