And it\u2019s Christmas season, the second-best period for movie watching.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the latest news out of Los Angeles <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/12\/hollywood-sign-los-angeles-mayor-karen-bass-light-up-night-1235206381\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seemed more than depressing.<\/a> The timing couldn\u2019t be worse.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Karen Bass rescinded former Mayor Eric Garcetti\u2019s final executive directive that would have created a program to illuminate the Hollywood sign\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Naysayers worry the illuminated sign could impact both wildlife and traffic safety. That sign, which <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/the-100-year-history-of-the-hollywood-sign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debuted in 1923<\/a>, originally spawned from a real estate developer and read, \u201cHollywoodland.\u201d The last four letters got the heave-ho in 1949.<\/p>\n<p>Then and now, the sign signifies the Hollywood dream machine, a beacon to wannabe stars and starlets seeking Tinsel Town glory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/box-office-sleepers\/\"><strong>RELATED: 13 BOX OFFICE SLEEPERS THAT SHOCKED EVERYONE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, it\u2019ll need its signature white paint to be seen at night.<\/p>\n<p>That news, combined with the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/12\/box-office-christmas-avatar-way-of-water-babylon-puss-in-boots-the-last-wish-1235205786\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">current box office updates<\/a>, has Hollywood begging 2023 to get here, and fast.<\/p>\n<p>Total weekend box office over 3-days for all titles is estimated to come in at an estimated $85.5M, -53% from 2016 the last time Christmas fell on a Sunday, and 41% down from a year ago when Spider-Man: No Way Home was in its second weekend.<\/p>\n<p>New titles like \u201cBabylon,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/i-wanna-dance-with-somebody-review\/\">I Wanna Dance with Somebody<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/puss-in-boots-the-last-wish-is-the-antonio-banderas-show-and-little-else\/\">Puss in Boots: The Last Wish<\/a>\u201d are all underperforming. That matches previous titles like \u201cBones and All,\u201d \u201cThe Fabelmans,\u201d \u201cTill,\u201d \u201cTar\u201d and \u201cArmageddon Time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re part of a shocking wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/oscar-bait-movies-bomb-box-office\/\">awards season fare failing to draw a crowd<\/a> this season.<\/p>\n<p>The new year always brings new hope, but recent signs suggest the industry will need more than 12 months to turn things around.<\/p>\n<p>The arrival of \u201cBabylon,\u201d the star-studded peek at Hollywood\u2019s bawdy days, is emblematic of the industry\u2019s woes.
