In December 2019, the Admiral Kuznetsov <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/admiral-kuznetsov-aircraft-carrier-fire\/\" rel=\"noopener\">caught fire<\/a> while undergoing maintenance work in Murmansk, with the blaze killing two people and leaving more than a dozen injured.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/newsletters\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Subscribe to Task &#038; Purpose Today<\/strong><\/a><strong>. Get the latest military news, entertainment, and gear in your inbox daily.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The fires are far from the only unfortunate incidents to befall the ship, which has become <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-admiral-kuznetsov-russias-only-aircraft-carrier-may-be-cursed-2021-11\" rel=\"noopener\">infamous<\/a> as one of the worst aircraft carriers ever built and has been undergoing an extensive overhaul since 2017. In 2018, a massive floating drydock holding the Admiral Kuznetsov lost power and sank, sending a 70-ton crane crashing into the carrier\u2019s deck.<\/p>\n<p>When the ship was actually underway \u2014 most recently operating in the Mediterranean and conducting airstrikes in Syria in 2016\u00a0 \u2014 observers <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/russian-aircraft-carrier-admiral-kuznetsov\/\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> the vessel\u2019s belching, black smoke and constant tugboat accompaniment in case this ship broke down. That\u2019s in addition to the other <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationdissemination.net\/2009\/01\/fatal-fire-on-admiral-kuznetsov.html\" rel=\"noopener\">fires<\/a>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/barentsobserver.com\/en\/node\/19810\" rel=\"noopener\">oil spills<\/a> and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/10\/21\/russian-carrier-plagued-by-technical-problems\/\" rel=\"noopener\">toilets that don\u2019t work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When the ship was transiting the English Channel in January 2017, the U.K. Defense Minister Sir Michael Fallon referred to the Admiral Kuznetsov as the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/25\/europe\/britain-russia-aircraft-carrier\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">ship of shame<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First laid down in 1983, the aircraft carrier did not become fully operational until 1995. With a length of 930 feet and a crew of 1,600 sailors, it was designed to carry up to 41 aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As The National Interest <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/the-buzz\/5-worst-aircraft-carriers-ever-put-sea-25143?page=2\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in 2018, though, \u201cthe collapse of the Soviet Union also meant the collapse of funding for the carrier project,\u201d and in the ensuing decades, the Admiral Kuznetsov has struggled to ever effectively operate, spending most of its career either undergoing repairs, requiring a tugboat just to operate, or on fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t stopped Russia from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/russian-aircraft-carrier-admiral-kuznetsov-refit\/\" rel=\"noopener\">laboring<\/a> over the ship, though. According to TASS, when the ship does eventually complete its extensive overall \u2013 which was initially supposed to be completed in 2021 \u2013 it will be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/emergencies\/1554367\" rel=\"noopener\">able<\/a> to serve another 10 to 15 years.
