Holes. Birds. Drains. Windshield wipers. A shower. A torso. A knife. \u2018Blood, blood!\u2019 A Victorian stairway. Mother in her rocking chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The writers waxed political about the movie: \u201cIn 45 seconds, the shower scene rips the 20th century in half; what Hitchcock was expressing was profound \u2014 that in the modern world, the center would no longer hold. And once the movie kills off its heroine (killing off, in the process, the very idea that God will protect us), it turns into the cinema\u2019s most hypnotic, seductive and prophetic meditation on fear, lust, innocence, violence and identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than perhaps any movie ever made, \u2018Psycho\u2019 is a film you can watch again and again and again,\u201d the writers contend.<\/p>\n<p>Famed writer and two-time Oscar winner William Goldman harshly criticized the last minutes of the film, which show a psychiatrist giving a long speech explaining the killing, in his book \u201cAdventures in the Screen Trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other choices in the top 10 included films widely regarded as iconic; \u201cThe Wizard of Oz,\u201d described accurately as \u201cthe gold standard against which all other cinematic enchantments are judged\u201d; \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d called \u201cthe greatest film since the fadeout of the studio system\u201d; \u201cCitizen Kane,\u201d \u201cthe visionary excitement of it, the through-a-snow-globe-darkly Gothic majesty of it, the joyous acting, the hypnotic structure, the playfulness, the doomy haunting symbolism of Rosebud, and on and on,\u201d and \u201cPulp Fiction,\u201d which \u201cinspired countless knockoffs, liberated movies to come from chronological storytelling and restarted the careers of Bruce Willis and John Travolta, while bringing a kind of hipster credibility to genre cinema that forever changed audience tastes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those films were followed by Kurosawa\u2019s \u201cSeven Samurai,\u201d \u201cruthlessly economical in its storytelling\u201d; \u201c2001: A Space Odyssey,\u201d \u201cThe ultimate trip \u2014 the only sci-fi spectacle that feels, at every moment, like it\u2019s taking you to another world \u2026 trancelike thriller meditation on the place of man in the universe stands as one of cinema\u2019s monolithic achievements\u201d; \u201cIt\u2019s A Wonderful Life,\u201d \u201cone of the most touching movies ever made \u2026 one of the most profound movies ever made\u201d; and \u201cAll About Eve,\u201d a \u201cfire-breathing satire of the fragility of stardom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number 10 pick, Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cSaving Private Ryan,\u201d was picked by the staff instead of his other movies, including \u201cJaws,\u201d \u201cE.T.,\u201d and \u201cSchindler\u2019s List.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other choices the staff made included picking \u201cDo The Right Thing\u201d over \u201cCasablanca,\u201d \u201cBlue Velvet\u201d over \u201cOn The Waterfront,\u201d \u201cThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre\u201d and \u201cBrokeback Mountain\u201d over \u201cE.T.\u201d and \u201cBambi,\u201d while including \u201cPink Flamingos\u201d and \u201cBridesmaids\u201d on the list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Variety issued a list of the 100 greatest movies ever made, and an Alfred Hitchcock film made the top of the list.
