According to <a href=\"https:\/\/flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FlightAware<\/a>, thousands of flights will be canceled.<\/p>\n<p>The storm is expected to become a \u201cbomb cyclone\u201d as Thursday evening turns into Friday morning. The term \u201cbomb cyclone\u201d is derived from the meteorological term \u201cbombogenesis\u201d or \u201cexplosive cyclogenesis,\u201d which occurs when the central pressure of a storm system plunges at least 24 millibars within 24 hours.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPowerful winter storm to produce widespread disruptive and potentially crippling impacts across the central and eastern United States,\u201d the NWS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/discussions\/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a>. \u201cRecord-breaking cold and life-threatening wind chills over the Great Plains to overspread the eastern half of the Nation by Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemperatures across the central High Plains have already plummeted 50 degrees F in just a few hours,\u201d NWS added, explaining that wind gusts would produce \u201cwind chills as low as minus 40 degrees across a large swath of the Intermountain West and northern\/central Plains, with more localized areas of minus 50 to minus 70 possible through the end of the week. \u2026 widespread Wind Chill Warnings, Watches, and Advisories span across over 30\u00a0states from Washington to Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parts of North and South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan have issued blizzard warnings.<\/p>\n<p>In southern cities such as Nashville and Atlanta, the wind chill may\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11565053\/US-braces-generation-weather-worst-crippling-storms-hitting-TODAY.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plunge<\/a>\u00a0to minus 11 degrees on Saturday. Birmingham, Alabama, is expected to drop to minus five degrees.<\/p>\n<p>United, American, Delta, Southwest, and Jet Blue have issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/winter-storm-us-airline-waivers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel waivers<\/a>, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia GOP Governor Brian Kemp issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/d14c94b8-20bf-409c-a13c-bb788e2f6d25\/v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state of emergency order<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cDue to the possibility of black ice accumulating on roadways and low temperatures, this projected winter weather poses a danger to the people of Georgia, and due to the low temperatures, the efficient transportation and supply of heating fuel is essential to maintain public safety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A winter system is also targeting Great Britain with Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.uk\/weather\/snow-alert-exact-date-significant-weather-event-could-strike-uk-as-forecasters-warn-snowiest-period-in-12-years-is-inbound-and-will-last-weeks\/410899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warning<\/a>\u00a0of dangerous conditions. \u201cTemperatures will drop in the run-up to Christmas and this could bring the risk of snow to parts of the country, some of which may fall to lower levels. \u2026\u00a0We could now be looking at a lengthy cold period setting in for a number of weeks and the potential for some of the coldest and snowiest weather since December 2010,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In what the National Weather Service (NWS) is calling a \u201conce in a generation type event,\u201d a winter storm system blanketing the continental United States has already forced the cancellation of over 1,000 flights and threatens thousands more as the Christmas weekend approaches.
