Cameron immediately burst out laughing.<\/p>\n<p>The context, of course, was the viral clip of Damon from the 2021 Cannes Film Festival \u2014 when he revealed that Cameron had offered him a role and a 10% stake in the massively-successful film. But the \u201cGood Will Hunting\u201d star was already committed to filming another installment in the highly-successful \u201cBourne\u201d franchise and had to turn it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJim Cameron called me. He offered me ten percent of \u2018Avatar,\u2019\u201d Damon said at a Cannes press event, laughing as he made the revelation. The audience laughed as well, knowing just how big a film \u201cAvatar\u201d had turned out to be.<\/p>\n<p>The film ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6241639\/avatar-2-costs-box-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raked<\/a> in over $2.9 billion worldwide \u2014 meaning that Damon\u2019s paycheck, plus the proposed 10% stake, would have netted him somewhere around $250 million or even more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\">\u201cI will go down in history,\u201d Damon <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/matt-damon-turned-down-avatar-10-percent-profits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said at the time<\/a>. \u201cYou will never meet an actor who turned down more money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cameron suggested that Damon, who has done quite well for himself even without the $250-million boost, ought to just let it go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s beating himself up over this. And I really think, you know, \u2018Matt, you\u2019re kind of like one of the biggest movie stars in the world, get over it,\u2019\u201d Cameron joked \u2014 but he went on to note that it was really only the actor\u2019s schedule that had gotten in the way. \u201cHe had to do another \u2018Bourne\u2019 film, which was on his runway and there was nothing we could do about that. So he had to regretfully decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\">Cameron made it clear that he was interested in having Damon be a part of an \u201cAvatar\u201d film in the future, however, but it would not come with quite the same incentive. \u201cMust do it,\u201d Cameron said of including Damon in the franchise. \u201cWe have to do it so the world is in equilibrium again.
