The man was found with multiple stab wounds shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday morning when police received a call about an assault, Toronto police said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/54716\/\">a press release<\/a>. The victim was taken to a hospital but died of his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was learned early on that the suspects being described in this were eight young females,\u201d Detective Sergeant Terry Browne said\u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qVpzefaLv4w\">a press conference<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The teens were arrested soon after the attack and charged with second-degree murder. Three were just 13 years old, while another three were 14, and two were 16.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve gleaned so far is that these eight individuals met via social media, they all come from varying parts of the city, and we don\u2019t know how or why they met on that evening. We don\u2019t know why they met downtown,\u201d Browne said at the press conference. \u201cWe don\u2019t know how long they\u2019ve been acquitted with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t describe them as a gang at this point but what is alleged to have occurred that evening is what we would traditionally call a swarming,\u201d Browne added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwarming\u201d refers to an incident in which multiple attackers target a victim together, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/21\/us\/toronto-stabbing-teens-arrested\/index.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Browne also noted that three of the girls had \u201cprior contact\u201d with police, but didn\u2019t elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>The detective sergeant said that the group of girls was also involved in an altercation earlier the same night in the same area and that a \u201cnumber of weapons were secured\u201d once the group was arrested, Vice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/jgp3pd\/toronto-teen-girls-stabbing?fbclid=IwAR1r7J9U-JBnyQhu6kPyTRmXcStFnlqsXAeoyGOE-iLPS0hJBNkHPECKk4Y\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Police wouldn\u2019t describe the victim as homeless, but did say he was \u201cliving in the shelter system\u201d due to recent \u201chard luck.\u201d The victim apparently had been staying in a shelter since the fall, Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/canada-police-arrest-8-teen-girls-swarming-allegedly-stabbing-homeless-man-death-toronto-street\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does have a very supportive family in the area,\u201d Browne said at the press conference.<\/p>\n<p>The teenagers appeared in court at 10 a.m. Sunday morning and were remanded into custody.
