Those displays remind us of Jesus as an infant, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%202%3A12&#038;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger<\/a>.\u201d Many Christians think of this moment as the beginning of our Savior\u2019s earthly presence as both God and man. But like every baby before and after Him, Jesus\u2019s life on Earth in the flesh actually began months before birth.<\/p>\n<p>The angel Gabriel explained how Jesus\u2019s earthly life would begin when He told Mary she would miraculously conceive \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%201:26-35&#038;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Son of God<\/a>\u201d while she was a virgin. After hearing this world-changing news, Mary went \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1%3A38-40&#038;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with haste<\/a>\u201d to visit her relative, Elizabeth. When Mary greeted Elizabeth, the Bible reveals that Elizabeth was \u201cfilled with the Holy Spirit\u201d and recognized the divinity of Jesus by referring to Mary as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1%3A41-43&#038;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the mother of my Lord<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reasonforlife.org\/divine-embryo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close reading<\/a> of Luke 1 strongly suggests that this meaningful exchange occurred during the embryonic period of Jesus\u2019s development \u2014 before He was even old enough to be called a \u201cfetus.\u201d Yet Elizabeth called Him \u201cmy Lord\u201d because that is exactly who He was even in that early stage of Mary\u2019s pregnancy. Elizabeth also referred to Mary as a \u201cmother\u201d \u2014 not a \u201cfuture mother\u201d or \u201cmother-to-be\u201d \u2014 because motherhood begins the moment a child is conceived.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Elizabeth\u2019s profound statements, abortion supporters who are reluctant to acknowledge the humanity and value of children in the womb may be tempted to say: \u201cBut Jesus is special.\u201d How very true! But while His divinity is unique, His humanity in the womb teaches us something about all mere mortals.<\/p>\n<p>Our Savior did not begin living among us as an adult, a teenager, a toddler, or an infant. Instead, it is notable that our Lord decided to begin His human experience when science says all human lives begin. As geneticist Dr. J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune put it, \u201cLife has a very long history, but <a href=\"https:\/\/lejeunefoundation.org\/21-thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">each of us has a very definite beginning<\/a> \u2014 the moment of conception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Jesus\u2019s decision to dwell with us as an unborn child and Elizabeth\u2019s recognition of His Lordship during Mary\u2019s first trimester of pregnancy, the Christmas story also highlights the precious humanity of children in the womb through its description of another unborn child.<\/p>\n<p>When Mary visited Elizabeth, both women were pregnant. The child growing within Elizabeth was John the Baptist, who years later would see Jesus and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+1%3A29&#038;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">say<\/a>, \u201cBehold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While in the womb, John could not articulate such a powerful statement in the presence of his unborn Savior, but he could experience joy and respond to that emotion in a manner that is common among young children. And that\u2019s exactly what he did.
