Reread the second part of that sentence; it\u2019s pure insanity.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Hannah Studer, deputy director of the behavioral health nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgestochange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bridges to Change<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s going to take a long time to fully see what\u2019s happening. We have to stay the course because this is life and death and this really is building an entirely new future for the state that the state deserves.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Huh? Memo to Hannah: Your \u201cbridges to change\u201d are headed in the wrong direction. Moreover, I beg to differ: The good people of your state do not deserve skyrocketing numbers of overdose deaths, including the unfortunate who are incapable of staying the hell away from hard drugs.<\/p>\n<p>According to Fox, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlegislature.gov\/lpro\/Publications\/Background-Brief-Measure-110-(2020).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Measure 110<\/a> passed with 58 percent of the vote in 2020. It decriminalized possession of personal use amounts of hard drugs and redirected a significant portion of the state\u2019s marijuana tax revenue \u2014 which had previously gone to schools, police, and local governments \u2014 to fund grants for so-called \u201caddiction services.\u201d See what I mean by <em>descent into madness?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simple question, which is unanswerable: What percentage of the 58 percent of Oregonians who voted in favor of Measure 110 were addicts hoping to avoid potential arrest, conviction, and prison time for doing hard drugs? And, Ms. Studer? Can you please explain a safe amount of deadly fentanyl for personal use? Apologies for continuing to repeat myself, but this is sheer madness, gang.<\/p>\n<p>David Potts, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lentsneighborhoodlivabilityassociation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lents Neighborhood Livability Association<\/a>, stated the obvious to Fox News:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s worked out great for the drug dealers and the drug users because we have an open-air drug market.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s more, via Fox:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Drug possession is now a Class E violation, punishable by a maximum $100 fine, which people can have waived if they call a hotline and complete a treatment assessment. Oregon Health &#038; Science University\u2019s head of addiction medicine, Dr. Todd Korthuis, said few people are calling the hotline, and most are only doing so to get their citation waived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly 1% of those issued a ticket for drug possession requested information about treatment resources,\u201d he told a state senate committee earlier this year. \u201cIn my discussions with treatment leaders around the state, not one has had any patient enroll in treatment due to these tickets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of 3,645 citations issued through November, 68% ended in a conviction because the suspect failed to appear in court, according to the\u00a0Oregon Judicial Department.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Let\u2019s end with perhaps the most insane quote of the article.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Williams, director of outreach for the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjusticerecovery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Justice Recovery Alliance<\/a>, which advocates for Measure 110, insanely thinks addicts should be able to seek recovery services on their own terms.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s very little evidence that coercive treatment works. Most people who use drugs recreationally don\u2019t think they have a problem and thus don\u2019t think they need treatment. So why would you force them into treatment?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Incorrect, Mr. Williams. <em>Should<\/em> they? Of course. <em>Do<\/em> they\u201d Not so much. In a majority of cases, unless addicts (and alcoholics) are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpinerecoverylodge.com\/forcing-addict-recovery-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced into treatment<\/a>, they\u2019re not going to seek it on their own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oregon has awarded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.org\/press-release\/2022\/08\/all-300-million-measure-110-funding-approved-expand-critical-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$302 million in grants<\/a> for \u201charm reduction,\u201d overdose prevention, recovery housing, and more. While drug overdose deaths have spiked nationwide since early 2020, according to the CDC, Oregon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mhacbo.org\/media\/2021_epidemiology.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addiction rate<\/a> remains among the highest in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, data suggests that drug addiction leads to homelessness, increases in mental illness, low-level crime \u2014 and homicides.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon Democrats? Do the math.
