According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/programs\/earthquake-hazards\/earthquake-magnitude-energy-release-and-shaking-intensity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USGS<\/a>, \u201ca magnitude 5.3 is a moderate earthquake, and a 6.3 is a strong earthquake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last time a sizable earthquake occurred on the Hayward Fault was on October 21, 1868; it has been estimated at a magnitude between 6.8 and 7.2.
